Title: Les Vacances noires
Scene Title: Les Deux
Progress: WIP
Kaito started when he noticed someone other than himself was reflected in the mirror. With a bit of an awkward smile, trying not to let on just how horribly unnerved he was, he turned to face his child hood friend. "I guess you've been there for a while?"
Aoko either was more disturbed than she let on or everything dealing with his other persona had already lost its element of surprise. Instead of reacting strongly about what she'd just seen, she regarded him almost suspiciously as she answered, "Not very long. Just long enough to keep thinking Arsène is a complete jerk."
So harsh.
Kaito rolled his eyes at the silent words in the back of his head and muttered a few choice words about his other self before stopping and running a hand through his hair in a vaguely uncomfortable gesture. Every movement he made recently was like that, as if he wasn't quite sure how to control his own limbs. As it was, he was having a difficult time performing the slightest card trick. It was more than a bit unsettling but he'd been able to keep from complaining about it. Hakuba, at least, never seemed to notice anything too out of the ordinary when Kaito was awake.
Or maybe he just thought it was impolite to point it out.
Either way, Aoko saw a difference in his manner and behavior and took it as a sign that it was, in fact, Kaito and not Arsène standing there with a bit of a frown on his face. With a bit of a smile, Aoko stepped forward and took hold of his left hand, lifting it up in something like triumph. "Well, it's good to see you awake, Kaito!" she said cheerfully. "You really let Arsène run wild more often than he should. We've been worried that you stopped wanting to be..."
He voice trailed off as it got slowly more saddened and concerned.
Kaito smiled as best he could. "Well, it's not like I choose when he comes out or anything--"
"But you were just talking with him," said Aoko hesitantly.
The magician shrugged, not sure what to say. "Well, this is the first time something like that has happened, so..." He paused for a moment before sighing a bit and running and hand through his hair again, trying to find something to do with his free hand. "And I've tried to limit that sort of thing but I dunno. Guess I'm not strong enough or something..."
Aoko stared at him for a moment moment before squeezing his left hand within her own. "Don't say that," she chided as lightly as she could even when a waver in her voice threatened to make it crack a bit. "You do the best you can, right? And Hakuba-kun said that you both still don't know how exactly all of this happened--"
"Arsène does," muttered Kaito with a bit of a scowl. "He even told Randolph but won't give me a clue beyond what I already know and Randolph doesn't talk about those kinds of things without permission. And believe me, I've even pretended to be Arsène more than once to weasel something out of him."
Aoko looked as though she didn't know if she should be amused or confused. "You mean the way he pretended to be you?" she asked, lips twisting awkwardly.
Kaito raised an eyebrow at that. "Well, it's easy to do since we're essentially the same person and all," he said slowly before frowning heavily. "By the way, remind me to kill him if he ever does that again."
Now seeming more amused, his childhood friend rebuked him gently, "No murder-suicides here, all right?"
"What?" he asked in a deadpanned manner. "It worked for Jekyll and Hyde--"
"Arsène hasn't murdered anyone, though," pointed out Aoko before she pat his hand as he started to mutter unhappily to himself again. "There, there. You know that while Arsène can be troublesome, he's never directly tried to hurt anyone, right?"
Kaito grimaced at that. "Ah..." he stated smartly. "Well, not hurt, no..."
Aoko gave him a hard look, not appreciating the evasive tone. "Kaito..."
He waved his free hand about in a defensive manner. "That sort of thing really shouldn't be talked about," he said as quickly as possible, especially when he had a sinking suspicion that his other self was laughing at him. "Especially without Hakuba's--"
"Without my what?" came the blond's voice in vague suspicion as he entered the room, hands working on getting the knot int his tie done.
Kaito put his free hand to his face and practically groaned in frustration while he heard Aoko inform the detective, "Kaito was mentioning something about something Arsène did that wasn't exactly violent but--"
If it were any other time and any other topic, Kaito would have found Hakuba's reaction to be priceless. Choking a bit, the Brit's hands fumbled at his tie for a moment longer before he gave up and left it alone as he tried to fight off the heat in his cheeks. "W-well," said Hakuba as nonchalant as he could manage at that moment, "Kaito is right in saying that--that Arsène didn't hurt anyone--"
Aoko looked between her two friends before letting go of Kaito's hand so she could cross her arms and ask stiffly, "What did he do?"
The boys exchanged a look. Kaito gestured that Hakuba should be the one to speak. After all, Kaito hadn't been involved with it until afterward.
Looking somewhat put-off and almost unwilling, the detective finally cleared his throat and, eyes leveling with Aoko's, stated, "He drugged me."
A long silence came.
Then Aoko demanded, "Drugged?"
Kaito sat down in the nearest chair and put a hand to his face again, really wishing he could disappear right there and then.
