I was reading Ken Rexroth recently and thought of you. An odd thought I suppose, but so many associations can flood the brain when one reads. You popped into my head when I read, "It is rather late in the day to have to recall that the Old Testament is one of the most disagreeable books in all the unpleasant history of religion." Then, further on, I remembered our chat with the war veteran at Millie's house. It came to mind because of this: "Today we think of Islam as a rather elementary and provincial religion--or at least of the Koran as such a book. But we forget, confused by centuries of misleading apologetics, what an enormous advance over both Christianity and Judaism Islam was." This was written in 1958 by a man who was not a member of any religion at all.
