theatrical_muse :: Intrigue
She wonders, every now and then, what her life would have been like if her parents hadn’t been intrigued by a white owl flying through the dining room window. She knows with absolutely certainty that she would’ve gone to university, likely to study dentistry as they did, following in the parental footsteps. She wouldn’t have met Harry or Ron and would have lived a muggle life - normal, yet ordinary. She thinks she might have liked it and not found it to be so ordinary, so long as she never knew what else existed, hidden to the muggle eye.
Oh, but she’s not giving herself enough credit. She would have caught a glimmer, despite the Ministry’s exceptional designs and schemes to protect the muggles of the world. She would have noticed, would have discovered some trace of the world beyond. If she hadn’t noticed something as a child, then she absolutely would have noticed during the war, when the strange, supposedly natural events were occurring all over without a rhyme or reason. She would have figured it out, or perhaps simply stumbled upon a copy of a text about Hogwarts - her reading habits have always been obscure.
In quiet moments, she pretends she’s normal. She sits in a café, thumbs through the paper, sips her cappuccino as if she knows absolutely nothing. She looks up every so often, silently observing the innocent interactions of others. She’s not entirely different - it’s not as if she isn’t human and not raised in the world. But, she loves the innocent magic - the sparks from fireflies twinkling in the night, the sort of magic that is natural, untrained. There’s an article in the paper about a strange sighting of white owls, and she holds a secret smile, glad that her parents were indeed intrigued by such things, enough to accept the unconventionally delivered invitation to an extraordinary life. She sips her drink and leave the faint imprint of pale lipstick on the cup, the only evidence that might show a secret hidden in the smile.
