Fred was going to kill his brother.

He dropped a bag of Puking Pastilles. Where? Oh somewhere by the lake? Nevermind the lake was ginormous. He was going to kill George.
Anyone could have picked them up by now. And the trouble they would get in if someone accidentally ingested them.

Crap
Fred saw Hermione sitting by the lake.

Well, that could be a problem. Hermione was decent enough girl kind of cute too. A little too serious maybe. She wasn't on board with Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes. She didnt understand the twin's vision.

But despite her serious nature, Fred liked Hermione. It must be something in the Weasley DNA that drew them to the bookworm. His whole family adored her. Fred mostly liked yanking her chain. It was easy to do. Getting her riled up was simple and FUN.

Fred just couldn't resist.

"Oi Granger!" Fred called. "You seen a little brown bag out here anywhere?"

Hermione let out something of a grumble and a sigh. She fell back in the grass, which caused her to look at Fred - or possibly George - upside down. "A what? No...."

But then she started thinking. Why would one of the Weasley twins be looking for a small brown bag? Out here? Her nose crinkled as she thought about any of the possibilities.

"Why?" And she sat up onto her elbows, staring pointedly at him. "What are you up to?"

Fred noticed Hermione seemed irritated. Though with her it was hard to tell...maybe her face really did just look like that?

Fred kicked up dirt with the point of his boot and smiled at her. He tried to look as innocent as possible (which was tough).

"And who says I am up to something?" Fred asked.

Sometimes she reminded him of his mum.

She sighed softly. Sometimes she caught herself wishing Ron would be more like the twins, especially as of late with his girlish mood swings. Oh, but twins lead to trouble, even if there's only one. Still, a ghost of a smile played on her features as she thought about it.

"Because you're always up to something. It's part of your charm, I suppose." She shrugged. "Now what is it, before more first years fall victim to your latest project?"

Fred often wondered if Hermione could read minds. It was strange how she could just sense when he or George were up to mischief.

"George may or may not have dropped a brown bag filled with what may or may not have been puking pastilles somewhere by the lake this afternoon. He may or may not have been trying to feed them to the giant squid." Fred smiled brightly. "But that really is all hypothetical, isn't?" Then he paused,"So you find me charming, eh?" he winked at her.

He waited for the fallout of his confession.

She took in a deep breath.

"You realize that Hagrid would be the one to tend to the mess of the squid as its a creature and on the grounds, both of which are his. And Hagrid, being Hagrid, wouldn't ask for any help because he would too concerned for the overall well-being of the squid. Which ultimately means I would have to come down here and help him since Harry and Ron are being...."

She didn't finish that thought out loud. That would mean she would have to admit to the real issue at hand there, and that certainly wouldn't be wise.

"Now, I admit, there's nothing mentioned in Hogwarts, A History about what happens when the squid gets sick. However, that could potentially destroy the lake and Merlin knows what else given that it is a giant squid. Consequence! That's the issue I have with your schemes. There's never a thought to consequence!"

She sighed, then quietly added. "You have your moments."

Fred had to admit he didn't actually think about all of that. Of course he wouldn't want to hurt the squid nor make any trouble for Hagrid who was one his favorite teachers (though he loathed Hagrid's class.). They had run out of students to test on and it was George's idea...or was it his...he couldn't actually remember.

"Alright then Granger I have thoroughly shamed now," Fred snapped. "But you will pleased to know that George never saw the Giant Squid. He was interrupted by some of those oafish Durmstrang prats who decided to take a walk around the lake. George took off and that is when he lost the bag."

"Heard that last bit, Ms.Granger," Fred chuckled. "What would Ickle Ronniekens think?" He shoved his hands in his pocket and smirked at her.

"Then I suppose we ought to find it before they do. In case you hadn't noticed, they eat anything. And I really don't want to see any of them puking...." Especially Krum, but she kept that in her head.

She looked up at him, "Do I care what Ronald thinks? No! Because Ronald hasn't even bothered to notice I'm a girl!" Her eyes grew wide as soon as the words left her mouth.

Fred nodded, "I suppose you are right. Though I would enjoy seeing Karkaroff lose his lunch and maybe Krum too. George and I cannot afford any setbacks though especially if McGonagall were to get nosy. She always expects the worse from my twin and I."

The bit about Ron took him by surprise. He was just taking the mickey out if her. He felt a pang of regret about his comment and then he felt sorry for her. Though if she caught onto to the fact that he felt sorry for she would probably hex him on principle. She was downright frightening at times which he loved. "Ronald has always been a bit slow on the uptake but he isn't the only bloke in the world you know? There are boys around here who see that you are in fact a girl. You could do better than Ron anyway."

He froze and the smile fell from his face. Where did that come from?

"Can you honestly blame her?"

She sighed, falling back in the grass and covering her face with her hands before he could see her blush. This was strange.... and unexpected. Of all the people to be having this conversation with? This wasn't how she envisioned it. In fact, she hadn't envisioned it at all, really. She thought of bottling it up and exploding on either Harry, Ron, or both given their proximity the next time they said the words Yule Ball within her earshot.

"I don't know of any. Aside from Krum. And he's just being nice." She cleared her throat. "Better than Ronald, hmm? Who did you have in mind?"

"George and are I angels. Ask anyone. We have never done anything that would earn that stern face McGonagall wears every time she sees us." Anything she could prove was actually more like it.

This was not a conversation Fred expected to have today or well ever, really. But he kind of felt for Hermione. He wasn't as dense as his youngest brother and quite suspected that Hermione might have a fancy for Ron though he wasn't sure why. "Neville Longbottom for one, knows you are a girl. I think he fancies you. And George told me he thought you were pretty though he would hex me if he knew I repeated that." He paused and sat down next to her. "As for who would be better? Well, I imagine Percy would suit you sensibilities better than Ron though that wouldn't suit my stomach. Krum is an international Quidditch player though not the most chatty bloke and probably has all sorts of birds on the side. Lot of girls like that Diggory git but he has Cho Chang. Lee Jordan is single?"

"Oh, so, basically anyone is better than Ronald?" She peeked through her fingers and smirked at him. "Ever since Krum has been following me around, Ronald's been begging for his autograph. How absurd is that?"

She pushed a few more loose, frazzled pieces of her hair out of her face. "Krum asked me to the Yule Ball, and I'm sure it'll be fine... Boring, but fine. He's very polite. Surprisingly so. He just...." and her eyes found her way to Fred's, which was strange and unexpected, "wasn't what I wanted, I suppose."

"No, there are worse things than Ron. Such as Malfoy. Goyle. Crabbe. Zabini. Millicent Bulstode or is she a girl...?" Pauses and looked away thinking. "I have never really been sure. No, there are far worse than Ickle Ronniekins. He is more or less harmless." Fred didn't mention that he had thought about asking Krum for an autograph until the git became Harry's competition and until he saw the idiot following Hermione like a love sick puppy.

Fred found he was irritated to hear that Krum asked Hermione to the ball. Why is that? Fred wondered. It shouldn't matter if he fancies Hermione or not. "I am sure you will have fun. He might even learn to pronounce your name right before the end of the night. But even if the evening is a bust it will agitate my babiest brother which should be worth the time, at least." Fred believed Krum was polite because he was angling for something from Hermione but he didn't dare tell her that. "Well, what do you want? And don't say Ron or you will have to cart me off to the hospital wing and I am too heavy ( ... )

"Harry, at least, can't really fend for himself right now..." She bit her lip in thought. "Otherwise, it's not a bad idea at all."

She laughed, crinkling her nose up a bit. "Viktor? Are you serious?" She shook her head. "He's nice, really he is for a big, fancy, International quidditch player, you know? But... he's not really my type. I'd at least like someone who can pronounce my name properly....without lessons."

She rolled over onto her stomach, propping her head up with her hands. She looked at him, smiling. "So what are these big plans of yours, Fred Weasley? Hmm? Besides, if I tell Harry and Ronald to fend for themselves, I'll have all sorts of free time on my hands. I could help you, if you want."
