Hamlet: The ensemble Theatre 18th April...
This production was amazing...
here was the raw and confronting power of Shakespeare's written word alive and at full force
the bare stage actually enhanced this and inetnsified the characters, their movements, thoughts and words
i could feel energy humming all around the room, radiating from the cast who had no props to work with
but consequently were able to create far more within the audience's imagination. Notably Hamlets physical reaction as his father's ghost appears, echoing his mind as it is twisted staggered and floored...
the two flame lit torches on either side of the performance space created pockets of darkness around the stage and illuminated the characters, adding to a more intense focus on the dialogue and ensuing tension with the drum beats pounding at the beginning echoing Hamlet's consciousness that would follow throughout the play as his indecision rose and fell and finally he reaches the final moments of his life.
