Promoting the 12-year-old-boy interpretation of The Faerie Queene.

I am succeeding at reading LJ again, but not so much at commenting. I am succeeding at writing fanfic, but not so much my dissertation. (Would my advisor understand that the 4000+ words of rent boy AU is an interpretive response to theory? Doubtful.)

I am proud of my new icon. Oh, Kevin, you are a fine addition to the hall of fame for reality contestants who came in third because they were too smart to win. And has anyone ever looked more adorable in a canary-yellow hoodie?

Tried to watch Mamma Mia! and failed, despite Meryl Streep. I'm in the middle of The Visitor, which is captivating despite the ugly depiction of academics and the fact that the two leads are the dead dad from Six Feet Under and Momo from Nurse Jackie.

Recent video links of interest:

Two minutes of animation that brilliantly sum up why hell is other people's music.

A Rolling Stone critic explains why the internets are killing rock criticism. I totally agree with him, and at the same time I'm not sure this is a bad thing, and also he's funny.

And this is why I wish I'd voted for Travis Wall instead of Benji, because holy crap can Travis choreograph.

Finally, user name meme:
my user name is: mosca, after the character in Ben Jonson's Volpone. I've been using it since my freshman year of college, when I took a course in network administration. (Those of you who know things about my undergrad alma mater know why this is hilarious.) Anyhow, still one of my favorite literary characters, and I'm too lazy to come up with multiple clever pseudonyms, so here we are.

my journal name is: Señor Baby Elephant the Pirate, which is the title of an obscure, out-of-print children's book about an imaginative baby elephant and his incredibly sarcastic mother.

my title is: "We should just live in cake light." It's been that for, like, three or four years, and I've yet to come up with anything I like better. It's a line from Six Feet Under, when Claire is stoned out of her mind and there is birthday cake. She's right: the world would be a lovelier and more poetic place if it were lit entirely by birthday candles. Oddly enough, this is the second SFU reference in this post.

my subtitle is: "If anyone quotes Judith Butler, I'll punch them." It's a line from an article by Michelle Tea about the awful transphobic policies of the Michigan Womyn's Festival which (still?) does not allow trans women to attend. The article is on the trans-friendly campground/protest event held across the street from the festival. Butler is really useful to me in my job, but the problem now is that her concepts of performativity and normativity are all over my fanfic.

my flist is called: "An army of ornery hipsters." It's a line from "Pixie" by Ani DiFranco, and I think it's a good name for a friends page.

my default icon is: Still happy upside-down Johnny Weir. I switched to him because I was tired of people thinking I looked like Kaylee; I hope people think I am this pretty.
