So long, indie cred.

Okay. The thing is, I'm proud of my mp3 collection. I'm proud in that scary Rob Fleming way, where I rearrange them when I'm sad. I've gotten past the point in my development when a band was only good if nobody else had ever heard of it, but I consider my rock snobbery part of my identity. My playlist is probably 75% semi-obscure to obscure, 20% ( Read more... )

mp3s, embarrassing myself in public

Sex Bomb was our 2000 Summer Abroad in Italy music. Picture, if you will, twenty-some undergrads and four very enthusiastic graduate students singing along to it in a small bus which is veering wildly through the Tuscan countryside. Loudly.

Heh. I bet "Sex Bomb" is like that for a lot of people. For me, it's driving through rural Japan, because one of my friends put it on a mix tape for my little Japanese car that only had a tape deck.

But your story is much more fun than mine, and it's a wonderful image.

6. Cam'ron - I.B.S.
Novelty rap about Cam'ron's digestive distress.

Try right-click and save. It gave me the same thing when I left-clicked, but the file is there and it works on right-click.

So what are the worst songs on your playlist?

If it's bad and from the late eighties to mid-nineties, I have it. MC Hammer, Bel Biv Devoe, Poison, Vanilla Ice, Britney Spears (um, OK, that was late nineties and I was really old enough to know better...), Marky Mark....Seriously, take your pick. It's pretty embarrassing.

There is nothing wrong with having Britney Spears on your hard drive. A lot of her singles are well-written pop songs.

As for the rest, you know, it's that thing about songs that get burned in your brain when you're young. Nothing to be ashamed of.

Those would be Goody Two Shoes by Adam Ant, Ah Leah by Donnie Iris, Show Me Love by Robin S, and the granddaddy of all guilty pleasure songs, My Sharona by The Knack.

I don't know the two in the middle, but both Adam Ant and The Knack can be enjoyed ironically. I say no shame.
