Gary Pfaff is one of the most recently announced artists going on next January's Rock Boat cruise, and I have fallen absolutely head over heels in love with his song
White Stars.
Hey, darlin', sing me a song
Light it up and pass it on
Turn around so I can read your lips
Watch the words dancing like a kiss
And your hair smells like strawberry wine
Lost the class in the glass last night.
Sunday morning, taste like champagne
Tiny bubbles wash away the stains
And you're... You're beautiful in whatever you do
So damn sexy with your attitude
And you taste like champagne
And it's White Stars all day
And you taste like champagne
And it's White Stars all day...
I can't really explain why I love his voice so much. Then again, I just listened to a demo of another of his songs on his MySpace page, and if I didn't know better, I would have sworn it was Shawn Mullins singing. So maybe that explains it... Except that I can't explain why Shawn's voice makes my knees weak, either.
Oh, well... at least there's a consolation that if I can't have Shawn on my cruise, at least I can have someone who sounds like him. (and no comments from
datahawk on his pseudo-Scandinavian looks... 'cause I'm not listening. Lalalalala...)

One of my friends loaned me Justina Robson's Quantum Gravity: Keeping it Real last Friday. He'd picked it up randomly at a bookstore and figured I'd get a kick out of it so he loaned it to me when he saw me. The cover looked interesting, and I started reading it a day or so ago. The only time I've had to read was on the train and when I was waiting at the station, so I'm only about halfway through it, but it's definitely a fun read. There's an excerpt (the first 3 chapters) available in PDF format on
the website (which doesn't seem to be working today).
From the author's description on her website:
Quantum Gravity is a multi part adventure of operatic proportions put together from all the things I like about Science Fiction and Fantasy. It is a shameless romp. It is fun from start to finish. If some serious themes have crept into it that was probably accidental and must have happened when I wasn't looking (ahem). There's a girl cyborg secret agent with a troubled past, an elf rock star, some cracks in the fabric of existence that are starting to stretch the wallpaper - and not forgetting necromantic possession, doomed love, hot sex and friends who would sooner eat you than help you if you get them wet...
One of the other reviews says:
SFFWorld.com. 2006: "...excellent romp...think an enthusiastic melange of Laurell K Hamilton's Meredith Gentry, Tad Williams' War of the Flowers, Anne Rice's The Vampire Lestat and touch of Marianne dePierre's Parrish Plessis, even The Bionic Woman or Transformers and you get an idea of how much fun this book is."
And that's pretty accurate from what I can tell. :)
It's kind of Cyberpunk meets Lord Of The Rings meets World Of Darkness meets Harlequin Romance. :D
