the end of an era

Yep, we're actually letting go of it. Drum and Dance Saturday in Cambridge, I mean. Next Saturday night, Dec. 15th, will be our annual Winter Solstice Drum and Dance, and the last one that Jimi and I will be organizing. We are letting the lease on the First Church space go, the one we've had for 17 years (plus a year at the Old Cambridge Baptist Church before that -- we've been doing this for 18 years! And it was going for ten years before that).

For the last year or more, we've been putting out feelers for someone else to step up and carry it forward. But the drummer folks we know who were once in the Boston area have moved away (many now in Western Mass and making the Amherst D&D cook), and we just have not been actively networking and participating in drumming events in the city, where we would meet and draw new people to D&D. We know there are young folks drumming in Boston, but they don't know us. There have been a few people who have expressed a desire to see it keep going, but none of them will actually take over the lease and commit to doing it. And it is time for us to stop.

I know that what we have done over these years has stimulated and inspired a host of drum and dance circles and events all over the country, and I feel very good about all the lives that have been touched and the cultural impact of our work. At 28 years, Drum and Dance Saturday is the longest continuously-running drum circle in the US, and it will be a while before any other event breaks that record. So the legacy continues, and it feels good to have space open up for whatever is next. For me, it's about writing the book I'm working on, which is turning into a memoir of my years co-creating this amazing movement and community.

So I hope to see you on the 15th. Let's take this out with a bang! (and a gun go-do pop)
Dress up, bring food and drink to share, and let's see it off in style.
