Went out to Long Island on Sunday. Rainy day. It started with light rain but the heavy rain and hail began once I got past the Lindenhurst area. So, for the day, I just did relatively easy geocaches that involved little or no walking so I wouldn't get too wet.
Encountered a nasty neighbor at "Lucky Mega Micro" in Medford. The woods behind his house are public and there's a public trail access, but he apparently thinks he owns everything back there. Even so, there was no excuse for his uncivil behavior. His first words when he saw me emerge from the woods were "What the h*ll were you doing back there?" I've had just about enough of the likes of him, so I just told him to stop being confrontational and that he should ask his question more nicely. Really though, he ought to be ashamed. He is 20 to 30 years older than I and yet, I'm the one who has to tell him to be nice. Clearly, some people don't mellow with age. Anyway, being assertive worked. He calmed down a bit, long enough for me to explain the game. After all that, he still wanted the cache removed. (even though he had no business making demands because it's not on his property) With some people, you just can't win.
On the flip side, after finding "Down by the Bay - Revisited - H36", I again met the neighbors. This couple was out walking their dog and they were nice. From talking to them, I found out that they were outdoor enthusiasts and they know many of the wooded areas up and down the Carmens River. However, even though they live next to a DEC area, they didn't know that DEC permits were free. I shared this information with them and they just might get their own DEC permits and maybe find some geocaches in Edgewood too.
Went to Flushing Chinatown as usual for dinner. The city was doing some repaving work on Northern Blvd, which caused a traffic delay and made my final approach very slow. I'm close to the bottom of the barrel as far as Long Island geocaches go so I won't be back for two or three weeks, which I hope will be enough time for them to finish repaving Flushing-area streets.
