Sunny day with temperatures in the upper 40s in the afternoon and 39°F by the evening. I haven't been to Staten Island in quite a while. It's probably been more than a year since my last visit because I had some unfound geocaches there that had been out for that long.
I thought it was an okay day. Perhaps a bit slower than I'd like because all of Staten Island's local roads seem to be slow and narrow with parked cars on both sides. The only problem was at the last cache site and it was a good thing I was about to stop for the day anyway. I was wondering why that cache was rated 4 stars for terrain since the hill wasn't that steep. Then I stepped into the booby trap! There was a mud hole on the side of the hill. It was covered under leaves so I didn't see it until one foot was deep in the mud. Ugh. The irony is the mud hole was closer to where the GPS pointed than the cache was.
Anyway, after the mud hole incident, I didn't feel like going out to dinner so I beat a hasty retreat and just picked up a box dinner and some groceries at the Chinese supermarket in River Edge on my way home. See? This is how mud holes affect NYC's economy. :) Now that I've read the online logs for that last cache though, I see that the locals have been using that park as a toilet. So I should be glad I didn't step on something worse.
