I, Lewis

This journal is now a political blog:

I think we were fed a fall guy of sorts. Not to say that Libbey was not an important member of the Bush administration. He's just no Rove. Or at least not quite. I mean, lets not forget, up until about a month ago, there was only one name in this investigation, and it was the same name we had since the story broke.
See, here's my deal. When we first heard about this, Joe Wilson came out and flat out said this came from Rove. Now at that point, nobody could really say anything about it except that it needed to be looked into. Not to say that that was all people said. People said, "Of course he did it!" which was silly because Wilson clearly had an agenda against this administration, and he knew how to strike at the heart. Others said "This is a lie!" which was also silly, because at the very least, Rove has been accused of this type of thing several times before, and if he was guilty even once, we wouldn't know, because nobody really looked into any of them.
But then we got out first bit of evidence. Joe Cooper grudgingly released his notes. For me, this was a big deal, because it was the first time any story was solidly backed up. And the story that it backed was that of Joe Wilson. Now I believed him. Now, he was suddenly legit.
Now I'm insinuating a few things, and I want to clear them up as best I can, which pretty much means putting in a bunch of "I don't know"s. Pretty much, I don't know shit about Fitzgerald. This is a guy who worked for Clinton, and the Patriot Act. This doesn't help. Now, the morning that the indictment was issued, he talked to Rove's lawyer. This may be a common practice, I don't know. All I know is that it doesn't smell right.
Because a phone call involving Karl Rove has proven to be mighty influential over the years. Seeing as the law says that Fitzy can give out very little information, and he seems pretty clear on that, I think it's safe to say that this was at least intended to be a persuasive phone call. A few more "I don't know"s: I don't know if these persuasions worked, or if they were done legally, or really, if there were persuasions. That's just a safe assumption in my opinion.
So that being said, I will offer a scenario, keeping in mind that my only evidence of this is its possibility:
I think nobody really knew what they could do, let alone what they should do about this when it first started to progress, and by the time they got a hold of themselves, Rove had evidence against him. Once that happened, you couldn't just pass the buck to a pissant. Someone pretty high up needed to take this fall. Fortunately, the way the White House works, very little is done by one person. So they counted their losses, and Scooter went down.
This brings us to the phone calls. I think, once again, with no evidence other than it's possibility, that this was the last in a series, basically saying, "You've got Libbey. Rove will be a tougher fish to reel in. At the very least, hold off on Rove." This probably went along with a lot of "Rove is a very important and powerful man. He has a lot of influence. He has helped a lot of people climb to the top. (wink wink) If you cut him some slack here, it may benefit you later. (wink wink) For example, he will help you progress your career. (wink wink)"
Now, Fitzy doesn't read as someone who went "Oh my. I had better help out Karl. I'll get in really good." I think the frame of mind was more of a pending shit storm if an indictment was issued, and while there was enough evidence to bring him down alone, there wasn't enough to withstand the fight. Better to hold off on it now, and if we strengthen along the way, we'll see what happens then.
I think Scooter's going down, but it doesn't really matter. If he really fucks up, he'll spend a few years in a resort. If not, he'll pay a hefty fine. Either way, until there's a verdict, this will go further and further down the page, which is a shame, because this is kind of a big deal. Not because of the perjury, or even because of the leak. This is important because it's the government manipulating the media, and pressuring people to stand behind them. We kind of function on the basis that this will not happen.
I want Rove to get pulled into this because it will draw attention to it, and get him out of the game he plays so cunningly (other appropriate adjectives: brilliantly, underhandedly, unrestrictedly), but I don't care how many days he spends in Minimum. Really, I just want your average American to understand what's been done to them. I want us to say, as a Nation, "This is unacceptable." There seems to always be a general enemy. A group we hate. At one time it was Bigots. At another time, it was Communists. Now it seems to be Terrorists.

I would like it to be Tyrants.
