The Early History of Chocolate in Mesoamerica
MSU/AIA Lecture
FREE
Chocolate is a widely appreciated luxury and the object of multinational trade. Most people know that chocolate originated in Central America. Professor Rosemary Joyce of the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley, will discuss her recent research on cacao use before 1100 BC, and the early history of Theobroma cacao, the plant from which chocolate is made. This journey through the history of chocolate offers a window into the ways archaeology has developed in the last 20 years.
A short musical set will open the evening at 6:45. Mexican musician and composer Alfredo Villela will play traditional Aztec instruments.
This program is a collaboration between the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA), the Center for Heritage and Archaeological Studies at Montclair State University, and the Montclair Art Museum.
