I just got word that David and I were hired as "For Love or Money" at the St. Augustine Pirate Festival, and I am so tickled about that.
Matt and I played music for years and were hired for many weddings and a few parties here and there, and we played regularly for the John Levique Pirate Festival and the Florida Pirate Festival. We had wanted to get into more pirate festivals, but things just never went anywhere that way. Dave and I are playing our kind of music at a good time, because now it seems that pirate festivals are getting bigger and becoming more popular and they're a great venue for folks who don't want to do ren faire. Renaissance and medieval stuff is almost too different from modern life for some people to participate in comfortably, but pirate festivals are more accessible to many.
A number of factors have all come together at the right time for enjoying what we do... Mike and Kathy from Pirates of the Treasure Coast started acting as organizers and sort of agents for pirate acts and festivals, the festivals have become more prevalent in our region, and I feel that live musicians for these events are being seen as more necessary to creating the atmosphere that the organizers desire. There are even a few pubs across the bridge from me in Tampa that want Dave and me to play there a few nights a month, because our music is fun and different, and not the mainstream stuff that 99% of musicians play.
All I know for certain is that we're playing more music in more places, and enjoying all of it. :-)
