The Closer I Get to You
"Gokudera..."
"What."
"I've been wondering. Why do you wear glasses just sometimes?"
Gokudera looked up from the textbook. Yamamoto was staring intently into his eyes - as if while Gokudera was wearing his spectacles, he was some sort of curious creature inside a big glass cage.
"Does it bother you?"
"Well... no, but." Awkward in all directions, Yamamoto rubbed the back of his neck. "Other kids wear them all the time. Old people wear them when they're reading and stuff. And you're not old."
Gokudera snorted. "Other kids have to wear corrective lenses. Don't compare me to them. All I have is hyperopia."
"Hyperwhat?"
"I'm farsighted," Gokudera said quickly, before he could launch into a long and complicated explanation that would skim right over his companion's comprehension skills anyway.
"Okay. What does 'farsighted' mean?"
Big sigh.
"It means," he said with (what was to him) the patience of saints, "I can see objects just fine if they're far away, but not if they're up close."
"Sssoooo..." This was clearly taking its toll on the other boy's delicate brain cells. "The closer something is to you, the harder it is for you to see it?"
That was exactly it, but the baseball freak sure didn't sound like he was getting it.
"So, what if something was really close? As in, really close? You still wouldn't see it?"
Gokudera chose not to dignify the obvious with a reply, and tried to concentrate on the book he was reading.
"What about this close? Like you and me are right now? What about if it's closer? As in really, really, REAAAALLY close?"
Gokudera shut the textbook with an audible SMASH. He removed his glasses so he could see the idiot better. "Look. Stop wasting my time. If you don't - "
And before his reflexes could even trigger, Yamamoto was leaning in. Putting his face up close. Sealing his open lips with his own. Yamamoto was always faster. At everything.
When it was done, Gokudera sat absolutely white and absolutely still, like a cornered possum. He didn't think he could ever be done processing this incident. Was that tongue. Was that TONGUE?!
"Wow. That surprised you?" Yamamoto looked off to one side and scratched his chin, the wisdom and smugness of Truth itself on his face. "I guess it all makes sense now!"
