Valentine’s Day, shmalentine’s day. If the holiday of love leaves you feeling cold, perhaps it’s time to take matters into you own hands (in the form of reading a book; get your mind out of the gutter). While normally I’d suggest something with a bit more literary merit, it is Valentine’s Day, and perhaps a bit of decadent smut and fantasy is in order.
Looking for the guy of your dreams only to be disappointed again and again? JR Ward writes novels that will occupy your mind in the meantime. Her heroes really are the stuff of fantasy, mainly because all of her heroes are vampires. That’s right, romance novels have finally entered the realm of the paranormal. Ward’s popular series, the Brotherhood of the Black Dagger, follows the exploits of a band of vampire brothers as they do battle with the evil Lessening Society. They also do battle with their hearts and, ahem, other body parts as each brother falls under the spell of a different heroine.
Filled with mystery, danger, intrigue, romance, humor, and (who am I kidding here) sex, Ward’s novels will keep you up nights, furiously flipping through pages to see how each new story will end. Make no mistake, this is not fine literature. It is, however, entertaining, with characters likeable enough to suck you in to the storyline. With five books currently published and a sixth set for distribution in June, Ward’s brotherhood is already a favorite among many female readers. If you’re in the mood for something spicy this Valentine’s Day, you may want to give them a try.
In order, the current five books are Dark Lover, Lover Eternal, Lover Awakened, Lover Revealed, and Lover Unbound. These can be purchased at any local bookstore.
