Swiped from artekka (EDIT: Oh, and apparently I was tagged by kadaria before I posted this so... ^_^):

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 3 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.
5. Don’t you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.
6. Tag five people.

Douglas suggests that all social systems are vulnerable at their margins, and that all margins are accordingly considered dangerous. If the body is synecdochal for the social system per se or a site in which open systems converge, then any kind of unregulated permeability constitutes a site of pollution and endangerment. Since anal or oral sex among men clearly establishes certain kinds of bodily permeabilities unsanctioned by the hegemonic order, male homosexuality would, within such a hegemonic point of view, constitute a site of danger and pollution, prior to and regardless of the cultural presence of AIDS. - Gender Trouble by Judith Butler.

Yeah, I honestly did just happen to have a scholarly gender studies book sitting under my coffee table. It's my current "this book is more important than vet school" project. It's also the last book in the most recent flight of books recommended for my reading pleasure by Wilson College's own Larry Shillock.
It makes my brain hurt. Though it seems that I'll be totally understanding it by page 123. At the start of the book she is deconstructing not only gender, but also biological sex, and that just made my brain explode. I'd never even considered that sexes could be social constructs before. I'm still convinced they're not, but it was still a good read. It's been a while since something challenged me intellectually.

Erm and I tag:
sareanna (who probably won't do it), belladonnac, clarimonde (who may have no time for it), aeowynswan, and radreamer (though heaven knows he never uses LJ anymore)

Life sucks. And I wish I could talk about it, but at the moment I'm basically having to deal with these issues alone. I'm a fool. *sighs*
