Morgan was a good friend. So good, in fact, that she went to Corinne's violin concert, downtown, all by herself. Elliot had been busy driving home for his dad's birthday, and Jason said he had a date. Morgan believed, however, that he just didn't wanna go to a violin concert.
Now? It was almost 10 at night, Corinne had done awesome, and Morgan wanted to head home. Corinne had to stick around for more rehearsals because she had another performance the next night so Morgan said her good-byes, promised to call to let her know she made it home and headed for the bus stop.
She reached the stop just as the bus pulled away. Figured. Morgan stood around for a bit before looking around and decided that the bus stop? Not really where she wanted to chill out. So she headed back up towards campus to hang out with Corinne, mooch a ride off of her.
When she reached the recital hall, there were only a few performers lefts packing up.
"Um, is Corinne around?"
"Nah, she skipped out already. Heh, its actually thanks to her that we got to leave so early. She got him on board with the idea that we actually need sleep."
"Oh. How long ago did she leave?"
"About five minutes. Sorry." There would be no catching her before she left, Morgan knew. Corinne was parked right outside the doors.
"It's fine." She could just call Cor and have her turn back around for her.
"Yeah, but...I mean...sorry because they're going to be closing the building now. So if you needed her for a ride? You're gonna have to wait outside for her to come back."
"Oh. Yeah. That's fine." Morgan said, heading towards the door. "I'll be fine until she gets back." The guy nodded and headed for the other door with his friends.
"Take care."
Morgan let out a tired, humorless chuckle. Then she sunk down to sit on the stairs, defeatedly. Her cell phone was, for the first time since she had gotten it two years ago, dead.
She was obsessive about charging it, usually. But she'd been so go, go, go this week that it had run down, down, down. Morgan felt a litte like crying.
She made sure to stick close to the buildings on campus but she wandered around in search of a payphone. All buildings were closed down, no way to get inside to the payphones she could see, just out of reach.
She could wander further from the light and relative safety of the buildings for a phone but...Morgan wasn't an idiot. No way in hell would she wander off into the dark without a destination in mind.
Of course, hanging around in the semi-dark wasn't smart either. But it was her only option. She had never felt so vulnerable and alone her entire life.
With nothing better to do than hang around on campus, Morgan headed back towards the bus stop. Maybe she'd get lucky and the bus would swing back around. But a quick look at her watch said, Nuh uh, sister. The buses ain't runnin'.
Still, hope made her go towards the stop. And hope had her sit on the bench in the little bus shelter.
But fear and paranoia had her so tense her back started to hurt. Especially when a group of guys started hanging out in the parking lot near the bus stop. Morgan had never wished for a phone so hard in her life.
And then a couple of them noticed her and started to cat call. And Morgan felt a little bit like crying again. She nearly did started to cry when a car pulled over to the curb a little ways away and then pulled into the parking lot with the cat callers.
"Morgan?" Morgan let out a tiny little sob of relief when she recognized Jason's voice. "What the hell are you doing down here alone?" he demanded, beelining towards her.
"The buses stopped running and Corinne already left and my phone is dead and I have never been so happy to see anyone in my life! I could kiss you right now!"
He laughed a little and started to lead her to his car by her elbow. "Just call me Superman. Come on, I'll get you home." And thus, the night from hell was over.
