I must say that after only 4 days in the hospital, Dan is looking better than he has in a month. Still pretty pale, but better.
I have been down there every day, keeping a steady supply of clean socks, underwear, shirts, and t-shirts, scrabble game, cribbage board, cards, stamps, envelopes, gummies, (since these are naught but glorifed jello anyway, they are acceptable on a clear fluids diet.) audio books and other incidentals coming his way.
Tomorrow, though is my last day off and I start work again on Sunday. So, what with 10 hour days, I won't be able to see him from sunday until Thursday. He has a phone in his room, and I will call often.
I have my little routine here in the morning - get dressed, take my meds, feed the birds, (the bluejays, pheasants, and doves become quite irrate if the feeder is empty and there is no cracked corn on the ground. I then head down stairs and stoke the fire in the furnace, usually there are enough coals left to get the fire started with the help of some kindling. I then tend to the kitties' toilette, food dish and water fountain. Believe me, there are no more dire prophecies foretold than by a cat who can see the bottom of the food dish. I bring in two cartloads of firewood, we don't use that much during the course of the day so am getting a nice stockpile built up indoors. I check the temperature in my carboy, to be sure that it in the high 60's to low 70's to keep the fermentation happily burping away. Then, upstairs for shower, tea, and breakfast.
Wingnut is really missing Dan, she is moping around the house, sitting in his chair, on his lap blanket, waiting for "the lap" to return. But every evening after lights out, she still parades around the house with her trophies, reminding me that she is still the mighty huntress of socks and stuffed mice. Any real mouse or vole that finds his way into the house, be warned, Wingnut is on patrol.
I am missing Dan too. It seems rather strange rattling around this place, and having the whole bed to myself.
I take comfort in that he is getting better.
