You know I'm fairly certain it's impossible for a Jools Holland concert not to be completely, totally and utterly brilliant :P
Which is to say I had a fantastic evening :d There was some train-related stress on the way in and then the spot we picked to sit and picnic sadly turned out to be next to a bunch of smokers but by the time we'd finished eating, listening to the support act and drinking an entire jug of Pimms between two... *looks innocent*... we decided we wanted to be up and dancing for Jools anyway. We moved early enough that we had a spot by the railing and oh how I love being at the front for Jools & Co.
Where to start? I don't even know. I love them all so very much and the band always look to be having the most fabulous time. Special points tonight went to the Dangermen (the trumpet section) for enthusiastic dancing during one of Ruby Turner's numbers. Special points always go to Phil Veacock on saxophone for incredible energy and being fantastic and keeping everyone together.
One of tonight's highlights was the rhythm piece for Gil Lavis which was kind of infectious anyway but during which I started trying to tap the rhythm that Winston Rollins was playing and (as I often do) I didn't think about the fact that probably he could see me messing it up till he grinned broadly and started making his movements more pronounced till I got it right and it was just such a brilliant moment of conenction even if I did make a fool out of myself :D
Ruby Turner was, as always, incredible, Her voice blows me away (sometimes it feels like that's quite literally true) and she's always dancing and smiling and being generally wodnerful when on stage.
The other main special guest was Lulu who was... well she was Lulu and anyone who's ever seen her live will understand that. She still looks completely fantastic and gorgeous and when she was shimmying in "sweet Nothings" she looked incredibly sexy and she can still belt out "Shout" like always and she had us all singing along in "Hanging with the Band" and it's LULU what more could you want?
There was no Sam Brown (and no Valentine Moon therefore and oh the joy that gave me) but instead there was Louise Marshall and she came on quite small and thin and this huge, warm voice came out of her mouth and everything she sang was great but she stood up with Ruby in "Well Alright" which isn't easy. The song that really got me thoguh was "Georgia" because her voice was so sweet and warm and tingly as well as being powerful and strong and *shivers* I hope Jools records with her at some point.
And then of course there was the man himself, beaming widely and dancing along the stage and laughing when the audience started tossing inflatable balls around and singing and playing piano and guita and being his fabulous self. He gets an audience going like nobody else and then he played the Bumble Boogie (I think that's what he called it) and
...
I do struggle sometimes to find ways to explain when things are so close to pefection because I'm so enthusiastic in my language generally but when Jools plays boogiewoogie everything is just as it should be and you feel the music and see his fingers flying and the band take their part but it's Jools' show.
And then I came home to dioscover that the breakaway in today's stage of the Tour de France had not only been aught but Fabian Cancellera had won the stage... the yellow jersey went round all the sprinters, not keeping out of trouble as he should, and WON THE STAGE!
(and Mark was in 9th which is good because he was still on his bike and Zabel was in 2nd <3)
So generally the after work part of today has been enjoyable :P and now I need to calm down so that I can actually sleep.
