I realised something tonight- despite half the people I know being INCREDIBLY overexcited for Jessica Jones starting in November I still haven't got the faintest clue who/what she is. I mean I know it's a Marvel thing but is she a super hero? a mutant? an ordinary person caught up in all the aliens & superhero nonsense? Just no idea whatsoever ( Read more... )

I think she's the She-Hulk. From what I have gathered. Which might be why people aren't talking about who she is so much, because they don't want people to be confused and think it's the Hulk. Also she does a lot of work in her lawyer guise apparently, so her day-to-day persona is quite important to her story I guess. I assume it's just a niche thing.

Really? Wow. I had not picked that up at all. The lawyer thing (or at least some kind of legal connection) but not the Hulk thing. And now I think of it I have no clue what She-Hulk's name is either so yes.

I think it'll be a wait and see kind of a show.

(thank you!)

No, She-Hulk is Jen Waters. Jessica Jones is an ex-superhero who retired from superheroing after a traumatic experience at the hands of a mind-controlling supervillain (although that's all I really know about her -- looking forward to the show though because David Tennant is in it. He's the mind-controlling supervillain).

See I knew David Tennant was in it!

I really need to go wikipedia her or something but then I wonder if just experiencing it without knowing might be better?

I just wish some of their press gave a better hint at what was to come.

They are playing things close to their chests but there are a couple of really, really subtle hints in the announcement.

SPOILERS:

[Discussion of character and backstory]
As angevin2 said she was briefly a bright, bubbly superhero (she has super strength etc - I think she was called Jewel or something like that) but then Purple Man (Dave Tennent's character - see the ominous purple in the promo and him calling her name at the very end) mind-whammyed her - think Loki with staff, you are now my puppet level of mind control - and no one noticing. After she gets free, she hangs up her cape and becomes a hard-living PI (see camera imagery in the promo possibly) and doesn't deal with her trauma in the most healthy way (possibly hinted at with the shots of alcohol in promo) until she eventually gets her shit somewhat together, settles down in a stable relationship (with Luke Cage although that doesn't start of as the most healthy hook-up either) and eventually ends up with Squirrel Girl as their baby-sitter. What isn't clear is where in the arc they are setting the show - best
