I had this list of things to do yesterday evening and instead I mostly read and watched YouTube videos which was lovely but not highly effective in getting through my to do list... then this morning I accidentally fell into Tumblr *hides head in hands*

ACTUALLY saying that I'd deliberately set my alarm earlier than needed as I suspected that would be my first move and so despite the Tumblr detour I'm actually not doing too badly so far this morning and have even allowed myself a brief break to drink yesterday's advent calendar tea (Assam! <3) and eat (the slightly burnt examples of) St Nicholas biscuits.

Also this was a way of bribing myself to make phonecalls I needed to (all of which were rainbow related! RUBBISH)

All of this is burbling though and with only a few weeks left of the year I am SO behind on reviews of things and keep accidentally *coughS* booking new shows SO I'd better make the most of this break and do something on my fannish/online to do list *g*

People @ National Theatre (Lyttleton)

Well Alan Bennett's always a fairly safe bet for a good night out isn't he! Plus with Frances de la Tour playing the lead I was bound to like it before it even started and it was VERY funny in places.

Only I have to say that's sort of the thing. Unlike History Boys or Habit of Art I do have the odd reservation about People and I'm going to start with those so I can end with all the positives *g*

Basically my negative is that the play is so incredibly sneery about the National Trust and whilst I understand the argument (the Disneyfication of old houses, taking them out of history and preserving them, people traipsing through and feeling ownership of buildings that were never theirs to start with etc.) I still think the NT is a reallly important organisation and does a huge amount of work that IS actually the only way to save some buildings and some buildings/pieces of land deserve to be saved and then letting people into spaces they might not previously have seen is sort of the point?

I guess working in a museum I'm bound to want to support the NT at least a bit and I felt like the play might have kept my sympathy more if it hadn't got SO superior and also SO ridiculous (the whole chamber pots things)

Also I have to say Alan Bennett's tendency to give characters "dialogue" that is more or less straight to the audience works a lot better when the characters are teachers/students/directors/actors etc.

Despite all of that though I did hugely enjoy it. It's got an amazing cast and you really can't fault Frances de la Tour, she's magnificent and hilarious but always human

Also the subplot about the porn film was brilliantly done, totally silly and involved knitting so that was a definite win.

I HAVE incidentally now managed to post all my non-UK cards \o/ of course that does make some of them a little late but some of them are well ahead of the posting deadline? And at least it's DONE :D
