I realise only a very few of you will understand the amazingness of this but I currently have my laptop on my desk. At which I can sit. And there's SPACE. Of course my floor is somewhat covered with bits of stationary and filing so it probably won't stay quite so clear but it's a BIG step for me because my desk has sort of been a dumping ground for AGES (I found a theatre ticket from 2007 at the bottom of one pile...)
Anyway. This evening I'm theatre-ing so I suddenly thought maybe I should write out some sort of review for the last thing I saw (only a fortnight ago *coughs*) so here we go...
Billy Elliot @ Victoria Palace Theatre
It's taken me forever to get round to seeing this, kind of pathetic given how long it's been on and how long Dad's been saying I HAVE to see it. And of course now I finally have I really enjoyed it *g*
Our Billy was Aaron Watson (I think, this is why you should review things straight away!) and he was a brilliant dancer and a great actor and... a terrible singer *g* Which you would think would be a problem but actually it wasn't because Billy's a dancer so the fact that some of his songs were a little more said than sang didn't really matter. And yes he struggled at some of the notes in Electricity but because his dancing and acgting was so good you were really with him. I don't know if that makes sense but it's true :P
His ballet was fantastic, I think that was probably his main style and when Billy dances with his older self in a dream sequence it left me with a huge lump in my throat it was so beautiful <3
All of the strike stuff felt terribly relevant, still does, and when they lose and go back to the pits the song "Once We Were Kings" was absolutely heartbreaking. And at this point I should sayI absolutely adored Tom Lorcan playing Tony. He was so brittle and heartbreaking throughout and I'm fascinated by his relationship with his father and Billy and his loyalty to them and I have to admit to shedding a little tear when he had to stop his Dad breaking the strike.
The other stand out performance was Joe Massey who played our Michael. He had fantastic comic timing but also such an energy and determination and that attitude that lets him get away with wearing a tutu home and OH but I did miss seeing him in the "present day" at the end because as Billy left and he was left watching on his bike my heart broke for him wondering what his life would be like.
But Billy and Michael's duet dance was BRILLIANT and they had giant dancing dresses and trousers with them and the whole thing was brilliant.
We were also very taken with the tiny kid who opened the whole thing, I have no idea which of the "small boy" actors we had but ours was TINY. No more than 6 or 7 I'd have guessed and he was having SUCH fun yelling WANKER at the boxing teacher and being a mini grim reaper and sang every song he was on stage for!
So yes. All round thumbs up *g* and also a strong craving for some classical ballet...
And now off for some Shakespeare *g*
