As you all probably know, I participated in the M.I.L.C. protest on Facebook. I was protesting against Facebook labeling photos of breastfeeding "obscene" and, thus, deleting them and often banning the user who posted them. Breastfeeding is not obscene. Plain and simple. Why is it that photos of sexualized prepubescents abound yet photos of a woman nourishing her child are considered obscene? Society needs a wake up call. Formula is not normal or healthy. 12 year olds in hot pants and push up bras are not normal or healthy. And breasts performing their intended purpose, feeding a child, are neither obscene nor offensive. Even the popular American use of the word "nursing" for the act of breastfeeding is indicative of the illness of society. We musn't even say the word *breast* because even the word is offensive! Sorry, but I do not "nurse" my child unless he is sick. I do, however, *feed* him from my *breast* hence the term "breastfeeding." But I digress. The point is that breastfeeding is not obscene and women can and should do it wherever and whenever their child needs or wants it. That includes in photos posted wherever the woman so chooses. A woman breastfeeding a child is a beautiful thing and should be shared. Perhaps then society will grow up and remember what breasts are for.
As an example of the ignorance surrounding breastfeeding, I would like to quote a message that I received in my Facebook inbox today :
"Isn't Face Book supposed to sport a picture of yourself, and not one of your DD boobs? How is anyone supposed to know it's you for crying out loud! What were you thinking?!
Sorry, but I was shocked as hell to see this photo of your breast plastered all over the internet for anyone to see."
The above message was sent to me by my own mother. A woman who, ironically, breastfed both myself and my brother until we were each around 15 months. There is still a lot of work to do in reversing the damage that the formula companies and the puritanical bullshit beliefs have done to the human race. (cross posted from Facebook)
