So far, I haven't made any enemies since the last one. So here goes number two!!
Day One: Ten things you want to say to ten different people right now.
Day Two: Nine things about yourself.
Day Three: Eight ways to win your heart.
Day Four: Seven things that cross your mind a lot.
Day Five: Six things you wish you’d never done.
Day Six: Five people who mean a lot (in no order whatsoever)
Day Seven: Four turn-offs.
Day Eight: Three turn-ons.
Day Nine: Two images that describe your life right now, and why.
Day Ten: One confession.
This one seems so vague, but here goes. Most of these things are more than one thing.
1. I really like children. I love being around them, I love taking care of them, I love teaching them, I love learning from them, I love talking to them! They share their feelings, they're honest, they express themselves, and they tell great stories. They're passionately engaged in every activity they undertake, and insatiably curious and open-minded. I can count the number of adults I've met with all those qualities on one hand. I like children's books, and children's illustrations, and movies with children in them. And you know what? I prefer girls. Yep. Big deal. I've met a lot of kids, and I usually like girls more than I like boys. I don't know why it is so, but frankly I don't feel like I need to explain myself. Have you ever felt a need to explain the kinds of people you like to spend time with? It's kind of frustrating, and really puzzling. Honestly, I am kind of confused by people who DON'T like children. I mean, I don't think anyone should be a slave to biology, but don't you think it's a little weird to have no interest in raising the next generation of human beings? Anyway, this is getting into rant territory, so I'm moving to number two.
2. I really like books. I am pretty sure that everything I know (and feel) about the world was learned by reading a book or listening to someone talk about a book. I am worried that people are going to stop reading soon. It will cause our culture to collapse even further into this depressing pit of ignorance and hatred.
3. I believe that a balance can and should be reached by every thinking person between having ironclad convictions and beliefs and being open to change. I believe everything I believe for what I think to be very good reasons (usually either from personal experience or reading about it from a trusted source), so I will argue my beliefs very passionately. However, My mind can be changed by someone with equally well-thought-out beliefs that contradict mine.
4. I love movies! My favorite time period for American movies is the early 1970s. My favorite country outside the US for movies is South Korea.
5. I love fairy tales. If you like fairy tales or you know some, you should tell them to me. I mostly only know the Grimms and a few other odds and ends. I know a lot about them, but I only know a lot, mostly, about well-known stories. I want to be exposed to more, especially from non-European cultures.
6. I am very good at drawing and writing. I don't do enough of either, and sometimes I think I'm scared of doing something amazing with my talents, because I know to do something amazing would be to do something new and bizarre and frankly quite disturbing. The only time I've been truly happy with my art is when it's been disturbing. I think good art only comes from horrifying places in the human psyche. I think the art can be lighthearted, and deal with such subjects with levity, but it needs to come from somewhere scary or it's just comfort food.
7. I really like dressing up, wearing ties, vests, suits, etc. I feel like I don't have enough opportunities to do that. If you are every trying to buy a gift for me, a colorful accessory will always make me happy. Socks or ties, depending on your price range. I do not really wear hats, because my head is gigantic and most are uncomfortable.
8. My favorite author is Margaret Atwood. I love how she gets into my head and creeps me out. She has a deeper insight, I think, into the insanity that people live on a regular basis than anyone else. Her first novel, Surfacing, changed the way I think about writing forever. I aspire to have that kind of power.
9. I want to be a teacher. I want to change the way education works in America. I think our country is massively fucked up, and it's hurting people in a profound way every day. I also think that our country and our society is capable of being amazing. I think this will only happen with more and better education for everyone. I want to teach young people to overthrow the system, because I don't think I have the courage or intelligence to do it myself.
