Getting free internet is hard

Aug 26, 2006 09:24

There is currently no internet service in my apartment, and I can't see any open APs unless I stand outside the building. (last evening I sat outside the garage for a little bit to check my email actually) So, I convinced the couple who lives above me to let me use their network until my service is set up. Slight problem: the guy is tech-savvy and is using WPA, and my Ubuntu knows WPA not. Google tells me that I can try to fight with wpa_supplicant, or upgrade to dapper, get NetworkManager, and everything will work. Being the lazy person I am I brought my laptop to work and upgraded. Slight problem again: The only UIs for NetworkManager is Gnome-/KDE-specific. Argh!

Google, please cover SF (especially my area of SF) with wifi goodness soon.
