Flopping onto the bed, she spreads her arms and then makes an angel in the blanket resting on top; then she rolls over, curling up and sleeps.

Waking a few hours later, she pads barefooted to the kitchen and peers in the fridge; there’s nothing but she remembers a bottle of water being dropped somewhere and a chocolate bar she’d bought in some vending machine being in ... no. Wait. She’d eaten that.

Collapsing onto a chair, having found the bottle of water on the floor, she opens it and takes a long mouthful. She looks around the empty room.

Do I regret leaving my family and Chris? Have I made the right move for me?

She remembers tearful farewells and the balloons with Martin, Kim and Zara. She remembers Chris and standing before the lift, wondering if she’d step into it when it finally came.

No, I don’t. I needed to get away from an impossibly sexy paediatrician and Billie.

Never mind we’re now okay - I think we’re okay. Oh God, what if we’re not okay? What if I just imagined her hugging me at the pub?

One hand holding the bottle, the other covers her face until she shakes herself. No. I won’t do this. I’m here. I slept with Mick but Billie knows that was a mistake and Chris had moved on from it. I’m here, away from ... God. What if I’m not away and ...

Another mouthful of water and the bottle falls empty from her hand to the table behind her. She stands and walks into the bathroom, flicking on the lights. Leaning over the basin, she splashes water over her face. Straightening, her hands are on either side of the sink and she stares at her reflection.

“Don’t be stupid Nina,” she tells herself. “You’re tired. Your mother’s not about to storm in and accuse you of being your father. Billie’s beginning to move on with Mick and Chris has gone back to Alice.

“This is a new start and all that other stuff is in your past.” She meets her reflection’s gaze. “You regret nothing because that’s all behind you. No one knows you here and you’re away from the craziness that is the Proudman family. Now,” she continues firmly, “go back to bed and sleep under the sheets for what time you have until your shift at the hospital starts.”

She pulls away from the mirror and turns, turning off the light. She rubs her face between her hands before she manages to walk upright back to the bedroom. Jet lag, she decides, is a pain. Falling onto the bed, she curls up again but remembers to kick her shoes off.

“A brand new start, Nina Proudman,” she sleepily whispers. “Just you, on yo-“

The moon peeks through the curtains and sees her sleeping peacefully for the first time in weeks.
