Title: No regrets.
Fandom: Chronicles of Narnia (movie)
Rating: (G)
Time Period: After the Voyage of the Dawn Treader
Summary: Does Lucy regret finding the wardrobe?

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

I’ve sometimes wondered whether Lucy ever regretted opening a certain wardrobe door and this story was born from that line of thought.

Rain splats against the windows; grey clouds hang low, dark and looming. Lucy sits on her bed, reading the latest letter from Susan; despite herself, her gaze drifts to the painting hanging on the wall. On days like these, she can almost hear the creaking of sails and the lapping of waves.

The door opens and Edmund plops on the bed beside her; his gaze follows hers to the painting. “Do you ever regret it?”

She lowers the letter and tilts her head as she looks away from the painting to him. “Regret what?”

“Opening the wardrobe door.” Edmund leans back on the bed, propped on his elbows, and turns his face to her. “Finding that wardrobe door.”

The letter now placed on the bed, she puts her hands on her lap; her face is cast in shadow as she sits, back to the window, but he can see it clearly. “Why ever would I regret it?” She frowns. “Do you regret it, Edmund?”

He scowls thoughtfully, looking again at the painting.

“Edmund?”

Thunder distantly booms.

“I want to say yes,” he finally replies. “I want to say that I wish we could take it all back so I would never have met the White Witch, so I wouldn’t have fought Caspian in that cave for the gold to bring back to this world.

“But,” he now looks to his sister, “I know that if I hadn’t made those choices or had those arguments, I wouldn’t be the person I am now. And Eustace,” he adds, “would still be the prat he was when we first came to stay.”

Lucy laughs, picking up the letter and folding it. “He was a very good dragon!” She replaces the letter on the bed. “But an even better cousin.”

“Now.” Edmund rolls his eyes. “But,” he persists, “is there anything you regret?”

She slides off the bed, picking up Susan’s letter and placing it safely in a drawer. “I regret nothing,” she announces once the drawer is closed. “How could I regret meeting Aslan or Mr Tumnus?”

Thunder rumbles.

“But if there could be anything?”

“Only that we cannot go back,” she quietly states.

He stands, slipping an arm around her shoulder.

“Edmund! Lucy!”

“Come on,” he says as he guides her to the door. “We’d best see why we’re wanted.”

As they walk from the room, she looks back to the painting. “I regret nothing,” she whispers. “Nothing.”

As the door closes behind them, the flag at the top of the mast flickers and the dying echo of a roar is heard.
