“Coffee?”
“Please.” He sits at the counter; the filtered sun dances over his hair. “Thank you.”
Ruby pauses, looks at him. “For?”
“Catching me last night.” He smiles faintly, sheepishly. “I feel foolish.”
She smiles as she pours his coffee. “Monsters together, remember?” She throws a look at Granny as he puts his hands around the cup before him. “Just come off shift?” She leans on the counter before him.
He nods, savouring the dark liquid although it tastes different. Strange, after last night. “I can't discuss last night.”
“I know.” She tucks a wisp of hair behind an ear. “But, tell me this.” He looks at her. “How's Belle?”
“She's okay,” he says, setting down the cup. “Nothing worse than the memory loss, I think.”
“Memory loss?”
“Yes,” he replies as he lifts the cup again. “Didn't you know?” He frowns, looking at her. “She's lost her memory.”
Ruby pushes herself upright. She knew Belle had been there, that the car had almost hit her but memory loss? That was worse than she'd expected. “Do you want something to eat?” She hears herself asking brightly.
Too brightly.
Viktor frowns. “Are you all right?”
“I just need some sleep.” She gestures to the cup. “Another?”
“No,” he smiles, though faintly. “How much do I owe?”
“On the house,” she says, smiling. “Now go get some sleep. I'm sure,” she interrupts as he opens his mouth, “they'll page if there's an emergency. Now go. Sleep. Monsters together, remember?”
“Monsters together,” he repeats with another faint smile. “I'll see you later.”
She nods, smiling until he turns and the smile fades, drops. She's about to turn to the next customer when the scent of alcohol grabs her and she looks down, something green having caught her eye. “Viktor,” she scolds under her breath and tucks the money in a pocket before she turns to that next customer.
Belle's favourite book, she decides. That should help her memory aand while she's there, that money will be returned.
Now, she wonders as she pours coffee, takes orders, what is Belle's favourite book again ...?
