Amelia sits beside Mels, her wistful gaze on the boys standing next to the sandpit; Jeff is there, a soccer ball in his hands. Mels follows that gaze, nudging Amelia when she sees where her friend is looking. “You like Jeff,” she crows, triumphantly. “I knew it!”
Amelia glares at her. “I do not! Do I look like a girl?”
Mels nods, grinning, and Amelia shoves her friend’s shoulder. “I am not,” she huffs, her bottom lip protruding just a little. Then she sighs. “They won’t let me play.”
“Because you’re a girl,” Mels states matter-of-factly.
“Because they think I’m a girl,” Amelia sighs and turns her back on the boys. “I’m a boy,” she mutters mutinously. “Dumb boys.”
She can’t help but look over her shoulder; they’ve broken off into teams and are readying for the about-to-start game. She abruptly stands and stalks off; Mels grabs her lunch and runs after her. “Amelia!”
She doesn’t stop; Mels catches up. They now sit under a tree, Amelia’s back resolutely turned to the boys. “Dumb boys,” she mutters once more; this time, Mels hears her and sneers at the boys for her friend.
