They’re pressed at the corner of the building, backs to it. They’re talking, but it doesn’t look like it. If someone is walking towards one, they can’t see the other, and vice versa.
The younger has a cigarette. The older hates it, but wouldn’t dream of telling the extremely volatile other. The younger exhales with a loud sigh, smoke curling in the crisp Chicago air.
“First home show tonight.” He observes, his accent strong. He stubs out the cigarette on the wall and promptly lights another. Chain smoking is just another habit of his. “Are you nervous? Scared? They’ll be baying for blood.”
“I know.” The older sighs, wanting to move around the corner. But he knows he can’t. It’s part of the game they play. The game that ends with cigarette burns and soft wet kisses on gentle lips. “I am.” He admits to silence. “Not because of that.” The hiss of another cigarette being extinguished. “Because…” He trails off and smiles as he hears the strike of a lighter. He hates it. But it makes him smile, because he hates it so much.
“They’ll judge you.” It’s a guess from the younger, but it’s almost a statement. The older feels relieved. They know each other more than they know themselves. “Most won’t hurt you. The true ones.” The older gives a harsh laugh and a bitter smile.
His fingers are cold as they intertwine. “I’ll be watching you.” There’s the gentle brush of a kiss against his calloused fingers. “You won’t be watching me.” The younger drops the hand gently and extinguishes his final cigarette. “Good luck Michael.”
Michael shakes his head slowly and watches Tom walk away, hips swaying in a perfected moment.
I’ll be your best kept secret and your biggest mistake.
