William saw him walking down the road ahead. He saw the blonde hair first, then the jaunty walk he’d perfected, the slight sway of his much understated hips. His jacket hung off his fingers the way he’d always remembered seeing it. He’d changed the cut of his jeans. Instead of being straight legged, the calves tapered inwards, accentuating a figure that he’d never shown before. The broken messenger bag was still the same though, at odds with the dark blue jeans that clung so to muscled legs, the red leather jacket that trailed off his fingers. In the bag, he glimpsed books, a folder. As he turned left, following the pathway, he saw headphones trailing into a leather pocket and wondered briefly what he was listening to. If he should call. If he should tell, if he should guess. Suddenly, he stumbled on the kerb, something fell out his pocket. He picked them up instantly, but one escaped and he didn’t notice. He jauntily continued on his way, William watching until he was out of sight. He picked up the picture the man had dropped; half knowing what it was going to be. With a sickened heart, he looked. He recognised. The style of picture was proof, the jaunty self taken way. The confident smirk on the older man’s face, the mesmerising eyes of the younger. It had happened again. It had repeated. They never thought it would. He put the photograph in his pocket - he wouldn’t miss it. He wouldn’t miss it, he had the real thing. He had the real jaunty smile, the real confidence that man exuded with such grace.
And William only ever had a shadow. William was only ever given the shadow.
