OMG, so tired. Chris and I went to see Rush at Red Rocks last night. Got home at 1am, up at 7am for work. So tired. The show was pretty good. They opened spectacularly with "Limelight" then played some new stuff of Snakes and Arrows that we didn't know. Then they mixed up some new and old including "Red Barchetta" (which I originally types as "bruchetta" - maybe I should eat my breakfast), "The Trees," "Freewill," "Subdivisions," and a few other things I recognized but can't name. They closed with an awesome performance of "Tom Sawyer" that was preceded by a hilarious South Park bit on the screens of Cartman singing the song... sorta.
(You can see it on You Tube here.) For the encore they did another song we didn't know and then rocked out "YYZ". I would have liked a little more of the "veteran" music (as Geddy Lee preferred to call it), but overall the show was good.
What was most awesome? The drummer, Neil Peart, did this insane solo bit mid-2nd half that just blew me away. I knew he was talented, but holy shit. Just absolutely incredible. Then guitarist, Alex Lifeson, had his own solo moment before they went back to the band playing together.
What amused me? They had video on the monitors mixed into the show, so you see the guys in this mini movie before they take the stage. When Geddy came on screen people went crazy screaming and Chris looked at me and totally deadpan said, "Yeah. Like he's attractive." I about died. Geddy is ... not the hottest guy in the world.
I was also amused by how much Alex Lifeson does NOT look like a rock star. He was wearing slacks and a blazer, but man can that guy play the guitar. It's one thing to hear their music and know how complex it is, but to see close-up on screen of the finger work. To see Geddy playing keyboards and bass, the drummer playing more than a traditional drum kit, and Alex just getting down with his bad old self. Really cool.
What did NOT amuse me? $40 for a shirt. We weren't buying anyway cause we're broke (tickets were bought a while ago), but seriously $40? It was the same price for a tank top as for a long-sleeved T. And they sold them at that price, but not to me they didn't. Even if we'd had the cash, I wouldn't have spent that. I like Rush, but not that much, thanks.
