Don't Be a Musical Snob

Jul 20, 2009 13:38

I have a few musical credentials under my belt. I started playing piano when I was three, trumpet when I was ten, started voice lessons at fourteen and ended up with a degree in music education. I know music. I also know a lot of people who know music. And when I say know, I'm not talking about the type who are fanatics, who read Rolling Stone ( Read more... )

venting, musical snobbery

I agree with everything here. I constantly strive to always discover new music and there are certain artists (Groban for one, DC for another) who have really opened my eyes to music I wouldn't listen to otherwise. And its also let me rediscover bands that I used to love and listen to in high school and then forgotten, but someone else has recommended them and I was like, "oh yeah. They are great!" (Our Lady Peace, Better then Ezra, Sister Hazel).

Josh is fantastic at letting his audience know about his favorites and influences. It's because of him that I discovered the Afro Celts, who are really awesome. Great chill music.

*shrug* What's the point of living life in a box, and trying to fit everything else into that box with you?

You know I'm lol'ing all over the place on this one because we've had similar if not as in-depth discussions. The first thought that came to my head on the opening paragraph was "F'ing hipster douchebags". As a fan of and having spent an evening with the boys of Armor for Sleep the night "Smile for Them" dropped, I have a very different appreciation for "Williamsburg" than most people outside of that part of NY ( ... )

p.s. What the person didn't know was that the burned copy of The Dreaming's EP's was from the original masters. Don't worry, I have the actual CD that the band gave me safely in the house. I just really hoped they listened as none of the electric stuff ever gets played live any more, the acoustic stuff was only ever performed live once and the remixes are all done by Carlton (formerly of Deadsy). They're all pretty rad tracks.

Thanks for the recs. I'll look them up pronto.

As my dear friend Sarah says, I wish people could be arrested for douchebaggery. Like, I wish it was a felony. Then every time I hear someone utter a snobby phrase about some of my favorite music, I could go all citizen's arrest on their ass. Felonious douchebaggery. I love it.

What's unfortunate is that I'm preaching to the choir here. My LJ readers, for the most part, do not engage in this type of felonious douchebaggery.

Douchebaggery. (Had to say it again...)

Felonious douchebaggery is awesome. It needs a t-shirt like "Don't you wish stupid was painful?"

Totally understand the preaching to the choir thing. I write a lot of stuff that I know falls on deaf ears or is never discovered.

Did you get my email response the other day?

I try not to be small-minded about music but I still feel like there is a LOT out there that I'm missing. I did watch a youtube video the other day that had Sigur Ros as the music, though. ;) Anyway, well said all around. If you turn your nose up at an entire genre, you just never know what gems you could be missing out on.

When you have about 9 minutes to kill, look up Sigur Ros' Ara batur.

It's not their most epic, and I definitely don't think it's their most spiritual, but that song builds in such a way that by the time the boy's choir jumps in, I want to curl into the fetal position and weep. It's truly gorgeous.
