DANGER DANGER! Fire in the Disco!

Feb 20, 2008 15:04

So on my way to a research study for school today I heard a couple talking about the fire on queen west, it was the first I had heard of it being secluded in my section of upper-west parkdale, sleeping until the last nanosecond before I had to catch the streetcar ( Read more... )

this looks very suspicious when you consider all of the development going on in the area.

it does indeed seems suspicious, but anyone who has lived on queen street knows the state that most of the buildings are in. They are old, not up to code, have shared walls and roofs... I'd like to believe that it is just paranoid to assume foul play, but I'm sure if arson was involved it will be known. Fire depts. are rather adept at these inquiries, generally.

Good point about the old buildings but look at this - http://spacing.ca/wire/?p=2712 there was a piece in now magazine about this a month ago. Apparently the area that burnt was declared a historical landmark last year, though i have no source for this. The news media has already blamed it on a meth lab http://www.thestar.com/News/GTA/article/305207.
I don't mean to wax conspiratorial about this, it just came to mind immediately when i heard about the fire. Plus i learned today that the small art cafes were run out of yorkville by a tb scare propagated by the city. Developers play dirty when bribery fails

tb scare and a felony are two very distinct accusations, huge difference between threatening and intimidating versus potentially killing people and literally destroying lives. The meth lab story was debunked, as far as the articles I read around 3 or 4 ( ... )

Sure. whether its an act of god or whatever doesn't change the end result. one can speculate to no end on these things and get nowhere.
I suppose what i responded to was the press blaming it on evil drug pushers without a shred of evidence (an accusation already dismissed), but more finger pointing is pointless at this juncture. I can only say that due to my families experience in the USSR I'm predisposed to suspect authority, especially when money is involved. Either way, I'll be interested to see what goes up after the dust settles

dry wood, aluminum wiring, shared walls with no firewall layer...

i've been kind of expecting it for years, but i'm terrified of what they'll put up in it's place.
