An ending

Feb 10, 2011 09:22

This world is ending. Mercury is here as observer. The light is incredible as it envelops the stars and planets in its path, one after the other, all washed away in a searing white. The silence is deafening ( Read more... )

Makoto stood silent, watching the scene as it unfolded. She couldn't help but wonder... what was this world like? What kind of people lived there?

Were there people at all?

She recalled talking to Mercury about the possible fallout from the Nexus and it's existence, and here was an example of exactly that.

She couldn't help but feel worried.

Normally, it would be for Mercury to make a cold joke, a pointed jab at the senshi in one way or another.

But some things were too serious even for her. She did not look to her side to see Jupiter (Makoto, at present) immediately. When she did, she hesitated before speaking, as though undecided.

"I don't like this sort of sight."

The brunette nodded somberly in agreement with the sentiment, even though she didn't take her eyes off what was happening.

"It's... not pleasant. But... at least someone will see. Someone will remember."

Spoken like a sailor senshi.

"And what will that memory achieve?"

"What else can be done?" A simple question, and one she'd honestly like an answer for.

"Stop it before it goes this far." This is unfair of her, as she is thinking of her own world, or similar worlds, and not this one; but they are still the words that sincerely come to her mind.

She paused at this, thoughtful. Was there some sign they could have picked up on? Something they should have noticed that would have warned them that this was coming, would have allowed them to stop this?

"To do that we need to know it's happening in the fist place."

"I settled my world," Mercury says simply. It's not precisely the dismissal of this one that the words alone sound like; she does not believe in anything that could end an entire world callously or frivolously. But it's true that her own world has to be her first concern - Jadeite has reminded her of that - and it's a suggestion that in Jupiter's own world, Jupiter should see the signs as well.

"...I suppose the only thing I can do at this point is keep an eye on things." She said, though it was more thinking out loud than any real response to Mercury's words.

She can't help herself, really. Always, always, the senshi bring out her worst and cruelest side. And the way to be cruelest right now is simply to say this:

"It's not only Metalia that has the power to destroy the planet."

Mercury had her attention at that. Makoto looked to her, a frown on her face.

"...What else?"

"Who knows?" she said slyly. "It's a different world, after all."

"What was it in your world then?" Even if it was a different world, she was wiling to bet that the dangers would be somewhat parallel, even as the senshi themselves were.

Whether kind or cruel, her next answer comes with a tiny smile.

"You don't want to hear it." This could mean either that the answer is quite unpleasant, that Makoto will not believe the answer, or both.

"If I didn't want to hear it, I wouldn't have asked." Either way, she needed to find out. If it wasn't true, well, then no harm done other than some wasted time.

This time, perhaps tellingly, Mercury does not say 'the princess'. But the meaning is the same; perhaps the slight difference means nothing after all.

"The ginzuishou has an equal and same power." Those words are very deliberate.
