One Person's Pain...
It wasn't a place most children wanted to be: the dentist's chair. However, the current patient calmly laid there, letting her mouth be poked and prodded by a dentist and his tools. After a few minutes, the dentist drew back, shaking his head in amazement. "I must say, child, you have the most perfect teeth I've seen in 30 years of doing this job. You didn't even need a checkup."
Luna sat up, smiling. "Thank you!" she replied happily to the compliment, "Can I go now?" She had the whole room to herself. Usually, all six chairs would be filled, like ducks in a row, but Luna was a star, the child hostess of Kittycat Teatime, a show popular with children of all ages. It was all flash, bright lights and loud sounds. And it helped that Luna herself was as cute as a button. So for her, a private appointment, and a quiet room.
The dentist smiled and nodded, handing her a toothbrush and a bright, happy sticker. "Keep taking care of those teeth!"
"I will~!" Luna happily hopped down from her chair, skipping softly down the hall and back to the door of the waiting room, which she easily opened. The sight that awaited her was beautiful. A full waiting room, some children in parents laps. There were many play areas, but none of the children were using them. Some were moaning, some were crying, and almost all of them were clutching their cheeks and jaws. They were miserable, but even as they were complaining of tooth pain and whining about how much it hurt, they also wanted just one more jawbreaker, just a couple more M&Ms, even digging out chocolate they'd hidden in their pockets.
Luna loved it.
Keeping her face neutral, Luna stepped out of the office and onto the street, letting herself walk away a few feet before bursting into peals of joyful, celebratory laughter.
Her favorite pastime had been satisfied, for now. She supposed it was time to do something more serious.
