Let me out, it's all your fault

They caught her. Somehow, for some reason, Beryl is in jail. Or at least, she's been placed in a rather cold and damp-looking cell; the smell of must and grime is all about. Notably, she wears no jewelry or ornaments whatsoever ( Read more... )

"Jadeite-sama?" Yep, it's back to the formal honorific. She's not sure whether to hope he might help her, or whether to be ashamed to death at him seeing her, like this, here.

"It is nothing," she tells him, snappish at first, angry at everyone and everything for her imprisonment here. She looks away. When the silence stretches, she turns back finally.

"This is for a crime I did not commit," she informs the young shitennou. "I am accused of theft."

"I just said I did not!" Beryl's indignation gets the better of her briefly, but she calms herself enough to explain a little more.

"I am accused of stealing jewelry."

This incident is definitely bringing out that arrogant temper. Beryl eyes Jadeite, almost accusatory. "That is what they believe was stolen."

Once she has informed her visitor of this, Beryl turns slightly away. "They have taken them away until this is decided."

She hasn't even tried that. Even if asked, Jadeite (here) would of course deny ever giving a gift. And if he is asked afterward, he would deny it again. Of course, it is unlikely he'd be asked; what would he bother with a palace servant for?

"They are up the stairway, as always," Beryl informs the Jadeite in front of her. If he vouches for having given the necklace, she might very well be set free with a few stern words.

"Jadeite-sama?" The guard comes to attention quickly, looking mostly bewildered. He's used to the shitennou appearing suddenly if they wish to, but rarely has he seen Jadeite looking angry.

A shrug. Apparently there are no special orders concerning Beryl, since the guard seems more surprised by Jadeite's insistence than unwilling to comply. Hopefully the poor man won't lose his job once it turns out 'Jadeite' did not order the release.

Hopefully Beryl won't be in deeper trouble, either, for 'using magic to fool the guards'.

"If you say so," the man says somewhat laconically. He shifts a bit to fumble for his keys, and heads in the right direction.

Of course she'd be accused. Where would a maid get things that expensive unless she worked at the palace, unless she had access to the ladies' belongings, unless she carried some of them away with her?

What excuse can she make, either? She can hardly claim someone from another world gave them to her; what an obvious lie. She can only hope Jadeite acting as her magic gnome letting her out of the cell won't result in worse.

Finally, the guard arrives at the cell and informs Beryl she's free to go on Jadeite's authority, apathetic to his duty.
