Traveling and missing New Orleans already

May 12, 2008 22:42

Well, this is it. The days of sun and fun have ended and I have to leave my time in New Orleans. I connected this weekend with people I’d never meet in person before, and will never forget. My PD family could not all be here, but the ones that were, the time with them meant everything to me. I will not say goodbye to them, or that I’ll miss them, I will simply say you remain in my heart and I will see you again soon.

A punctual airport shuttle and a frenzied trip through the TSA checkpoint and I am here at the NoLa airport once again. The loss of my pocket knife which was forgotten in my waist pack wasn’t an easy loss to stomach, but these things happen. Just means I’ll need to be more careful to remember to check it into my luggage next time.

I did have some yummy chocolate frozen yogurt while I waited for my flight, and got to see that nice family I met on the way up and say “good trip home” as they left on the flight before mine. I was so sweet they remembered my name even. Oh, and Louis Armstrong Airport had FREE wireless…they rock! Trouble was, I was never able to get the network connection to function, not so cool. It said the signal was strong, but I could never get the network to connect.

I also saw the most beautiful young mother, with dark chocolate skin and almond shaped eyes that slated upward. She had a tiny stud in her sharply pointed nose and thick, long eyelashes, as well as a neatly trimmed arched brow. She had a very athletic build, not too slender, curves in all the most pleasing places, and a warm smile that lit up her dark eyes. Her nails were perfect French tips, and even though she dress in jeans and a black tee with black sneakers, she had a two row rhinestone diamond necklace that added a bit of elegance to her ensemble. Wow. I can guarantee I’ll be remembering her as a mc in one of my novels.

Her daughter was suuuuper cute. Her dark brown curly hair was weaved into short braids and pulled into two tiny top knots on either side of her head. Her ears were perfect ovals and her eyes glow with curiosity and intelligence. Her skin was more of a caramel color which looked wonderful next to the red hoody that covered her pink tee and pants. You can bet she will become a character too.

I talked with a few women this weekend about the odd idea that lesbian didn’t want to read about mothers and children (which I think is poppycock), and decided that no matter what some might say, I like the idea of having children in my novels. I mean, how many lesbians, gays, bis, trans, whatever have kids from previous relationships, and giving birth, any other that? Families are changing, the concepts of family has become more and more fluid. Why shouldn’t my writing show those changes?

The first plane was uneventful, and I got to Atlanta okay. I have decided rude people should be shot. Between the folks next to me on the plane who gave me the hairy eyeball from the moment they saw the double Venus around my neck. Do I care? Nope, not enough to want to take it off. I wanted one of the ones with the rainbow beads and I found it at a place in the French Quarter called Hit Parade.

The worst rudeness was at the restaurant between planes. I guess I’ve done customer service too many years in my youth not to be very irritated by people doing that job that treat the customers badly. I wasn’t being difficult or mean, so they need to get over themselves.

Other than that I was able to finish and start another chapter and after struggling with the $7.95 Boingo hookup, I was even able to get online to check some emails. It was a long layover, but it gave me time to recharge the laptop and get a few things sent out. I’ve been thinking about submitting my Make War Not Love story to the Academy of Bards, so I took this time to send it out to Roselle to see what she thought. I hope it’ll work for them.

The flight back to Wisconsin was uneventful, but stepping outside the plane to feel the cool air was a shocker. New Orleans was so nice and warm, and now cold cold cold. Even at home, I can’t seem to get warm at all.

It was nice to see the kids though. They had the sweetest mother’s Day gifts waiting for me when I got home. Both had grown flowers for me (a pot of violets and a marigold) and my daughter made me a pin and bracelet to wear. She is such a girl. They were yellow painted wood with purple flowers with yellow centers. Very cute.

It’s good to be home, even if it is only for a few days. Friday I leave for the RCGI Priestess Gathering where we’re ordaining four new Dianic Priestesses. Of course it’s a working weekend for me, no vacation, but it should be fun. I’m gonna try to get with a few of the authors that may come and see if we can set up a reading at the event somewhere. If nothing else, I’ll do one myself during one of the free times. And then next weekend, it’s Wiscon…crazy times this month.
