Music and sexual history

Aug 02, 2012 15:49

I figure I'll paste over the FB stuff first, then ramble a bit about some more things on my mind and going on. (some of that rambling ended up at the beginning of this whole long post, actually)

So I'd been talking about music in my life and singing, and that got me posting a bunch of music links on FB, which is something I relatively rarely do. Here's the "playlist":

It's been a musical few days. Here's one I haven't shared in my recent posts that's on my mind: Odetta: Ramblin' Round

This is the song that really first introduced me to the awe-inspiring power of her voice: Odetta: The Ox-Driver's Song

Another powerhouse favorite singer of mine. Wish I could find Prodigal Daughter to share, but this is a close second for me. The studio version from the dead man walking soundtrack is incredible too. Michelle Shocked: Quality of Mercy
I didn't post these over on FB because my phone was being a pain, but these are a few others of hers that I especially love, and that are up on youtube:
Come A Long Way
The Ballad of the Ballot and Bullet, Part 1: Ugly Americans -- Hell of a good history lesson in the video, too.
On The Greener Side
My Little Sister

Yeah, I'm in a musically nostalgic kind of mood tonight. Janis Joplin: One Night Stand
Didn't post it to FB the other night, but oh, how I love this song: Me and Bobby McGee

*chuckle* OK, just posting the music I had over on FB obviously isn't what's happening here. From here on out, it's some mix of stuff I did share and stuff I would have, or feel like sharing now. This may distract me for a good long bit -- hopefully I'll get back to the other stuff sooner or later.

Cat Stevens: Harold And Maude(1971) - If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out -- Nothing could be more appropriate for me right now. Nothing in the world. Harold and Maude is one of my all-time favorite movies, and Maude is a personal hero of mine (see icon -- It's my "joyful" icon). When I think about why I want so much to get over my fear of singing, it's Maude and this song that comes to mind most often.

Tracy Chapman: Fast Car. I remember this song flooring me when it first came out. Another voice I love, another awesome woman and generally amazing human being.

Propellerheads feat: Miss Shirley Bassey - History Repeating

Eddie Floyd - Knock On Wood *chuckle* Oh, this one featured prominently on my "roadtripping for hot sex" mix from many years ago. As was Janis Joplin's One Night Stand (above) and Melissa Etheridge - Skin Deep. Always listened to those last on the way into Chicago.

Yes I Am (amusingly, my kick-ass musical and rockin' dyke sweety totally does NOT dig Melissa, but I sure do!)
If I Wanted To
Resist (only version I could find was a video from DS9, Jadzia Dax and Lenara's relationship. I'm good with that.)

Leonard Cohen: Closing Time -- another one that just echoes through my libido. Fiddles have always hit me extra hard.

Joan Osborne: Right-Hand Man -- I don't actually think it's one of her best musically, but "I'm wired and I'm tired and I'm grinnin' like a fool" has been a long-standing refrain in my life, and the whole song speaks to me sexually on a damned intense level. Also, I'd never seen the video before now, but hot damn, is Joan sexy as hell in it!

Bonnie Raitt: Let's Give 'Em Something to Talk About

John Lee Hooker: Boom Boom -- on basically every sex mix I've ever made; his growl and the rhythm of the song just go right through me.

*ahem* OK, this has transparently turned into late night on the porch listening to sex music. So let's go with that, even if (especially if) it gets damned funny in the process. Expanding this out to a broader tour of "music that turns me on" over the past 25 years or so.

Alrighty, heading straight into embarrassing high school territory here:

Tiffany: I Think We're Alone Now -- I wasn't a Tiffany fan in general, but this one was the huge exception.

Whitesnake: In the Still of the Night (Whitesnake and Whitney Houston were the first two albums I owned) -- oh, the early-teens masturbation sessions in my life fueled by a Whitesnake soundtrack. This one particularly just turned me on beyond all belief. Like I said, it's going to be a rather embarrassing and amusing tour.

Heart: All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You

Divinyls: I Touch Myself

Def Leppard: Pour Some Sugar on Me

Guns 'n' Roses: Anything Goes -- All of Appetite, actually. That whole album is inextricably tied to some of my earliest "grope and tickle" memories with a good friend.

TRHPS "Sweet Transvestite" -- And from that day forward, Tim Curry has never ceased to do it for me.

touch-a touch-a touch me lyrics the rocky horror picture show -- Oh, back in the veeeeeery long-ago days when I identified with Janet...

Lita Ford: Kiss Me Deadly -- I went out of my way to watch this video when I was at friends' houses who had cable.

Joan Jett: Do You Wanna Touch

Cher: If I Could Turn Back Time (ok, at least half my sexual connection with this song was all about watching her dance around in that outfit)

George Michael: Faith

George Michael: I Want Your Sex -- Duh. There's really very little about my approach to sexuality over the years that could be described as "subtle", and that's pretty obvious in my musical preferences.

Salt 'n' Pepa: Push It

Billy Idol: Rock the Cradle of Love

Poison: Talk Dirty to Me

Cyndi Lauper: She Bop

INXS - Need You Tonight

Queen: Get Down Make Love -- *ahem* Embarrassingly, I just discovered tonight that one of my long time favorite sex songs, "Get Down Make Love" Nine Inch Nails is a cover of a version done by one of my favorite groups. How did I never know this? How? Anyway, I've now discovered the Queen version and am pretty damned psyched about it, but the NIN version will probably always have a direct line to my clit; so very, very, very tied to my memories of first year of college.

Shriekback: Nemesis -- another "specific memory" hotline to my clit, from the same general time but a different person than the NIN.

10000 singing Beethoven - Ode an die Freude / Ode to Joy -- This, forever, but Immortal Beloved is one of those movies that hits me from beginning to end.

When You're Good to Mama - Queen Latifah -- More recent, but day-yum! I've had a thing for her for years and years.

_______________
Back to a bit more random music before I finish up with this.

Tom Waits: Walk Away

En Vogue: Free Your Mind

Merle Haggard: Mama Tried

Jethro Tull: Fire at Midnight

Jethro Tull: Thick as a Brick

Koko Taylor: 63 Year Old Mama *bounce* Oh I've been trying to find this one, but having trouble since I only remembered a few lyrics, and was searching on my nearing-death-and-therefore-supremely-annoying phone.

Koko Taylor: Mother Nature

Johnny Cash: Man in Black
