Life and Linketies

Good to see that Irene's doing some favors breaking up early, although the flooding still seems pretty major in a lot of areas. Good thoughts to all still inundated.

Currently at work, with No Maps for These Territories on in the background. I'm tired, and in a bit of a maudlin mood for some reason.

On the positive side, I adored the Doctor Who last night; I tend to love the ridiculous and the timey-wimey, and I'm a big fan of River (who's a point of much contention in fandom), so it was pretty much entirely up my alley. Not counting the pirate episode, I think I've liked this season best of all so far. Moffat and Matt Smith both tend to work to my preferences, and I also tend to prefer when the TARDIS is a bit more crowded, so the multiple-companion approach of the last two seasons is totally my thing (plus, I'm a huge Rory fan, and really pleased to see marriage not treated as "the end of fun").

(Cleveland) - An estimated one thousand people took part in the city's first annual Slutwalk, a protest against rape and sexual assault against women. The event was held at Voinovich Park downtown.

A Weakened Irene Sweeps Northward
The hardest hit major city appeared to be Philadelphia. Mark McDonald, spokesman for Mayor Michael Nutter, said water levels in the city, which lies between the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers, were 15 feet above normal in some areas, and were not expected to stop rising until 2 p.m. Sunday. The waters were approaching the highest level ever recorded - 17 feet in 1869, he said. “There are many streams and creeks, and they are all above flood stage now,” Mr. McDonald said by telephone.

-- *sigh* I keep seeing more signs of the UK following the US's disasterous lead on politicizing abortion. Actually, thanks to active outreach efforts from fundies here, that's happening in a number of other countries, along with self-same fundies feeding homophobia in those other countries, too. *rage*

It's supposed to be sci-fi, not sex-fi: Hundreds of viewers complain to BBC over 'pointless' gay scenes in Torchwood -- *eyeroll* Also and as usual, no more explicit or lengthy that het sex scenes have been in the show. I, on the other hand, am loving the "Jack's romantic history" element of things.

Are We Coming Down to the Last New "Torchwood" Episodes We'll Ever See? -- I really hope not. It's been an odd series this year, but I still love it pretty intensely.

End of dieting? New movement focuses on health at any size
Yet a growing body of evidence suggests the HAES camp may have it right. One study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health randomly assigned 78 women to either a HAES program or a conventional diet program. The HAES women were coached in adopting healthy food, activity, and lifestyle choices but were given no rigid rules or restrictions. They also participated in support groups, in which they dealt with issues regarding body acceptance and feelings that tied self-worth to their size. The women in the HAES program saw improvements (based on measures of blood pressure, cholesterol levels, activity levels, and depression) both at 6 months and at 2 years. The women in the dieting group lost weight and had improvements initially but went back to their old behaviors, weight, and blood measures within 2 years.

Often, children do not realize they have problems with their vision because they think how they see is how everyone else sees. -- This, this, this! My vision was already 20/200 by the time it was diagnosed in 5th grade (it's 20/1200 now, so hooray for vision-correction technology!). I had no idea other people could see individual leaves on the trees instead of big green blobs. I was horrified at the time to get glasses, and as far as I was concerned it totally ruined my chances of discovering I was really Wonder Woman, but wow, it made a difference in my life.
