Most awesome shoes EVER.
Bec and Grafton and I all desperately want pairs of the various styles. And if I wanted to wear them with socks, I even have a number of pairs of toesocks, so I guess I could. those shoes! Last semester a favorite prof of mine was wearing them, and I swear I spent the majority of class trying to figure out what was on her feet! I had to go up to her and inquire. Apparently I have a few friends that wear them and I've only heard good things. I tried them on in Chicago and they ... take getting used to to put on. I am looking for a pair.

I live in a state of terror regarding the added risks to transwomen of assault and violence. Obviously, they are the target of our society's issues with sex and gender. There is another factor, too, though. Transwomen are disproportionately victims of assault even by people who do not initially know they are trans. I firmly believe this is because many transwomen do not display the body language used by women in our culture. When I was in India, I found that even veiled, people could tell I was western because I stood too straight and habitually made eye contact. I also took long, purposeful steps. This was not the body language used by their culture and it made me a target. Likewise, uglystrawberry consistently attracts unwanted male attention and not all of it is because she is a skinny blonde. The way she holds her shoulders and the way she makes prolonged eye contact with strangers, even the way she fearlessly engages in conversation whether or not she wants it... they all stand out from how women generally carry ( ... )

That's a really good point; I'm used to worrying about the additional risks for loved ones, but hadn't thought about how differences in body language might be affecting things to.
