My
101 list end date is in three days. I think I consider it wrapped up at this point; I haven't pursued any of the items on it for some time now, even after several revisions. I was going to do a more in-depth post about what I didn't finish and why (there are generally good reasons), but why bother, really? I'm ready to move on.
I finished 69 of the 101 items, or 68.3 percent. I think that's pretty good. I did start a new 101 list but ultimately abandoned it because a list that large gets daunting and annoying fairly quickly. I've decided to set smaller groups of goals for myself that I can change as I like, as long as I am progressing toward something.
Recently, I decided I would like to run a 5k, even though I am not really a runner. It's a short enough distance that I think I could do it with some practice, and I wouldn't even mind walking parts of it - the important thing is finishing. My coworker recommended a local group called Women in Motion that trains "women of beginner and intermediate exercise experiences" for events in the area. I am hoping to attend the weekly training sessions, starting next Wednesday, in preparation for the
Rutka 5k on July 26.
The reason for the 5k is twofold: one, the feeling of accomplishment; and two, the challenge, which gives me motivation to work out. I have to put a lot of thought and effort into keeping myself motivated and interested enough to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, as it is very easy for me to fall into long periods of inactivity, especially in the winter. Social settings work best for me, especially when there is a teaching aspect, which is why I work with a trainer and attend kickboxing classes. When we moved, I also made sure that I would have a space in which to work out and sidewalks on which to walk/jog. I will sometimes invest in a some kind of prop/accessory if I determine through my training sessions that I will like and use it (most recently, a stability ball). It's not that I love exercise - I like it well enough, but I could certainly find other things I'd prefer to do with my spare time - but I do love the results of exercise, and I know the consequences of not doing it. Still, aside from kickboxing (which I do love), it is work just as much as it is a hobby.
(On the subject of hobbies, isn't it weird when you start showing interest in things your parents always liked and you said you'd never care about that much? Like gardening. I have never had any interest in it whatsoever, but now I find it a bit exciting to see the things in my yard blooming and even feel a bit of pride when things I plant look pretty and healthy.)
Anyway. My other short-term goals are to throw Sarah a kickass bridal shower and bachelorette party, and to celebrate our first anniversary next month. We are thinking of going to Dave & Buster's because the combination of arcade games and alcohol never fails to disappoint us, and something casual and fun is more "us" than a fancy dinner. We will also unfreeze the top tier of our wedding cake (hope it tastes okay...) and toast with our wedding flutes.
Didn't mean to ramble so much. Maybe I should post more often? I rely too much on Facebook and its one-sentence life updates.
