D&D, 4th edition

As an avid board gamer and a well-known strategy fan, there's a siren's call that emanates from what little I know about D&D4e. I've never been a RPer, but I've always been quietly and mildly envious of those with friends geeky and dedicated enough to pull off campaigns. 4e takes it to a level with more personal appeal: I hear stories of game boards and, yes, tactical combat.

I know I have D&D friends. Please share your wisdom on this new edition! I've heard the fan backlash -- it's too much like a video game, it's trying to be World of Warcraft -- but as someone who's not personally invested in the D&D franchise, these only really sound like pluses.

Armed with the proper knowledge of whether I'd enjoy it, I don't know what I'd do -- but I want to know.
