I've been reading a lot of stuff about the hurricane and the conditions in New Orleans right now and I'm disgusted. I can't believe that this is happening in my country In this country! How can be have the hubris to think that we know what's best for other countries when it's been almost a week since Katrina and we still have people starving to death in the Superdome. I'm just so sickened watching all the political posturing while people are dying right now in New Orleans and the surrounding area. There are bodies floating in the flooded streets and the government is doing nothing.
Everytime there's a hurricane in the Gulf, people are always talking about how New Orleans is below sea level and how it could be a major disaster if one makes landfall there. And yet a week after one actually did, people are still stranded on rooftops and starving.
Though I do have some slightly positive news. Smith has announced that students in Western Mass who go to colleges that are destroyed can come to Smith for the semester free of charge. UMass has a similar program. So even if I'm completely disgusted with my government, I am proud of my school.
