signal boost: Livejournal laid off a lot of its employees, and rumors abound of imminent demise:
http://valleywag.gawker.com/5124184/the-russian-bear-slashes-a-social-network it's rather a shame... I'll probably take up blogging elsewhere if this happens, but I have a lot of friends here, and not so many on other bloggy sites... I don't so much like facebook for bloggage. Anyone who thinks I don't have your contact information is encouraged to email me your email/ web page/ whatever in case of LJ doom... in particular people I only met as friends-of-friends, like
ammonoid and
jokermage who I have no easy way to contact other than LJ.
I guess with RSS aggregation I should be able to make a friends page analog, but it sounds like a pain, and probably a lot of people either won't bother, or will find it too complicated, or won't be able to find everyone's new blogs. sigh.
Anyway, I vow to keep broadcasting as long as the power holds out.
edit: I just made montyy0.blogspot.com as a backup. I haven't figured out if they have a concept of "friends" yet, though. I'm thinking of looking at vox.com as well... any suggestions. Fooey. I like LJ. I could just make a bloggy thing on one of my own websites, but that'd be a pain, and would definitely lack the "friends" concept.
edit2: I also apologize for being alarmist if rumors of LJ's death turn out to be greatly exaggerated.
edit3: also, note that my contact info (email, webpage) is on my profile page. Yes, I get a lot of spam.
edit4: counterspin of "layoffs don't imply doom" from (possibly) more credible sources:
