Replace embedded videos and/or images with placeholders in LJ

Last weekend we were talking about assorted problems associated with using older computers. One of them that I knew to be fixable, although I couldn't remember offhand exactly what the details were, was sites such as LJ choking on too many pictures and embedded things.

This might or might not have worked for the person who brought it up (the limitation was a Win98 box, so Firefox was limited to version 2), and this fix is from Firefox 3.6.

Tools(Windows) or Edit(Linux) -> Preferences -> "Content" tab -> uncheck "Load images automatically".

But really, the point of whether that would have worked is moot, because if you go to the Display tab of My Account Settings on LJ, Video Placeholders has a checkbox for "Replace videos embedded in journals with a placeholder icon", and right above it, Image Placeholders had a dropdown menu of choices for "Replace inline images on your Friends page with a placeholder for" all images, large images (640x480), medium images (320x240), or nothing (display all). One presumes that selecting medium images means that large ones will be replaced as well.
