Del Martin, pioneering lesbian activist, has died at 87.
With her partner Phyllis Lyon, she founded one of the first lesbian organizations in the US, the Daughters of Bilitis, in 1955. They worked for LGBT rights for decades and were among the most important lesbian activists in the world.
In 2004, they were the first same-sex couple to marry in San Francisco, though that marriage was later declared illegal; they were also the first same-sex couple to legally marry in California, after 55 years together, just two months before she died.
There are more details of her profusion of activist work in the obituary linked to above. Truly a life well lived.
