At some point, when Mary was fairly certain that the rest of the staff had things under control, she went back upstairs to her suite. She made a few quick phone calls to Danny and Mike, then went to check on Sam. "We really need to talk," she said. "I'm really worried about you."
"You worry about everything," said Sam, who was busy shoving clothes into her suitcase. "Look, I know I've been a little edgy, but it's hard to relax when I have clients waiting for me back in Las Vegas."
"I talked to Danny, and he said that they've had people covering your clients for the past month," said Mary. "In fact, he seemed to think that you were pretty burned out. He and Delinda were hoping you would take a break, but you went to Hawaii and promptly started lining up new clients."
"You know what my job is like, Mary. I have to keep moving to stay ahead of all the rest of the casino hosts. You keep swimming or you get eaten by the rest of the sharks," said Sam, pouting. She did not like how this conversation was going.
"I know that you're so used to running at full-steam everywhere you go," said Mary. "Delinda said that you were supposed to take time off after the kidnapping, but you didn't. She found a therapist for you to help you deal with the trauma, and you refused to go. And she said that you kept having hallucinations after staying up all night."
"It's no big deal!" said Sam. "Everyone stays up in Vegas, and if I'm taking clients to a club, it keeps me awake."
"But why keep pushing yourself like that, Sam? You don't need the money," said Mary. "Why can't you take a break and get your head on straight? You had a client who drugged you and shoved you in a trunk! That's not something you can just pretend never happened. Take it from me, you're not going to be able get past it in a place like Las Vegas."
"Is that why you stay here in this sleepy little town?" asked Sam. "Mary, I would be bored to death in a place like this. It may be great for you, but not for me?"
"I thought as much," said Mary, giving Sam a timid smile. "I called Mike. You can stay with him for as long as you need as long as you relax. No working, no chasing clients, and you have to take care of yourself."
"I hate you," said Sam. "But at the same time, after the kidnapping, you were the only person I thought would understand."
This called for a hug. Mary wasted no time in wrapping Sam up in an embrace. "I'm sorry I couldn't be there for you, sweetie," she said. "And if Ed wasn't so busy dealing with my crisis, he might have been able to help you."
"Oh, please," said Sam. "I didn't need anyone to come running to my rescue. I took care of the guy myself once he was stupid enough to let me out of the trunk."
"You're a survivor, and I know you're going to be okay," said Mary. "Now, do you need me to help you finish packing?"
"I thought you would never ask!" said Sam, throwing her suitcase at Mary. "Make sure my stuff doesn't get crushed. I have no idea if Mike has a local dry cleaner."
And with that out of the way, the girls were finally able to get to the important stuff, like taking bets on how long Mike's marriage would last.
