Has anyone on my friend's list actually seen The New World? Those varied few I've actually talked to about this, sort of stare into space, their mind's eye caught in some sort of vision past. They can only speak the highest compliments about it, claiming it to be a sacred mystical experience, jaw-dropping, and life-affirming. Those lucky few claim its the best theatrical experience they've ever had, and cite Terrence Malick as a living God, purely on the merit of this film alone. I TRIED to go see this a few times, but New Line sure didn't make it easy for would-be patrons. I think it was in theatres for all of two weeks, despite the hype for it.
The place the ball seems to have been dropped the most was the fact that this is a 70 mm film that was marketed to 35 mm theatres! And now I have to watch it for the first time on a 27" 4:3 CRT screen, formatted to the 2.35:1 ratio. I'm really upset about it, but at least I didn't have to wait the standard six months between theatrical and DVD release. I will be sure to grab it on my lunch break!
